If you're going to eat rice, Basmati (particularly brown Basmati) is not lower carb, but it is low GI. If you're on a low carb diet, it's best to weigh your rice to make sure you're not overdoing the carbs per meal, and bulk it up with veg and protein. You can also blend it with cauliflower "rice". Not sure where you're located, but here in Australia we also have a rice variety called Doongara which is a low GI shorter grain variety (shorter than Basmati anyway and not as fragrant).
