I've just been diagnosed too as a developing Type 1. My levels are also all over the shop! Started Metformin on Friday, have cut the carbs and am drinking water only. Lowest glucose reading I've had is 11.9 and the highest is 21.9! Ketones are all over the place too, but seem higher during the day. Had one as low as 0.2 and the reading just now 15.9 glucose and 1.1 Ketone. Haven't eaten anything since 8pm last night and have drunk nothing but water.

And my fingers are getting bruised

Hi. What makes the GP think you are a developing T1 (LADA)? I'm not saying it's wrong but is it the result of the two common blood tests GAD and C-Peptide. It sounds like you should may be on insulin if your test results indicate LADA. Metformin will have only small effect but there are different tablets to use in the short term and insulin.

To be honest I wasn't paying too much attention to what was said as I was trying to take it all in, but I had bloods and urine samples. I remember my HBA1c was 97mmol. I have another appointment tomorrow, so with a clear head I'll be able to ask the correct questions.

The only other thing I remember was being badgered to go into A&E if I felt really ill and my readings for Ketone were still over 0.6. As I say, they are fluctuating and quite drastically. Had a reading of 1.0 and 2 hours later 0.3.

Hello and welcome to the forum @Gremzi I have moved your posts into your own thread in the 'Type 1' section for better visibility and to save the original post from being distracted with your own query, best wishes J

It sounds like you are being observed closely however ketones can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis which is life threatening so please keep on top of your team, if this is late onset type 1 then insulin is inevitable and will help keep you under much better control with your blood sugars, but if you do feel unwell please seek urgent medical assistance.

Hi Gremzi,

Take a moment to breath and relax. Life is good, once all of this is under control and you can carry on with your normal everyday life.

I am quite concerned that you have been given Metformin, if this is Type 1 / LADA. I was diagnosed last year in April and was put straight onto injections, to help control the blood sugar levels. Not once, was a tablet even spoken about. I was also told to eat as I was before, so we can determine the amount of insulin my body currently needed at that time. I truly believe this was a universal process for anyone suspected even early on, as type 1?

Please don't starve yourself of good food / nutrients. But, you are doing the right thing on tracking your keytones, as they can become serious if left untreated and rise too high.

For peace of mind, I would request to speak to your GP / Nurse ASAP. If this is type 1, it cannot be managed by Metformin. Only when someone experiences a good Honeymoon Period, can this be considered IMO. But, this all depends on the amount of BETA CELL MASS, that has been destroyed and laying idle from the auto immune attack.

Please get some clarification on which type of Diabetes you have Gremzi. If it's type 1 or 2, it doesn't matter, what matters is that you have 100% the correct treatment plan early doors.

Any other questions, please ask.

If you have been diagnosed with type 1, then the recommendation is to start insulin straight away. You need to contact your specialist as being treated with only Metformin would support type 2.

Thanks everyone :) So far I've only been seen by the acute care team and Diabetic Nurse. I have a call with the Doctor tomorrow and have a list of questions to ask!
