Thank you @KK123 I will try that and see how I get on. I suppose I was so worried about losing more weight and having no energy, that I wanted to avoid cutting out carbs altogether and naively thought reducing and changing the types of carbs would be ok. It’s not easy this is it?

Hi KayLS, it doesn't mean that you will be off carbs forever of course, once you know how and in what quantity they affect you, and you know what type you are etc, you can then decide on how many you wish to consume or not, balanced with your numbers! x

Hi @KayLS :)

In your situation, I would be asking for a referral to a specialist diabetes clinic (I don’t think GPs and practice nurses usually authorise the c-peptide and GAD tests, so you may need a specialist). Alternatively, a private test may be the quickest option.

however, you may still be T2, and if you are, then that daily menu you posted is still much more carby than the majority of T2s here on the forum can tolerate. Bran flakes and brown carbs are still just as carby as any other breakfast cereal and white carbs. And it is driving your blood glucose too high.

have a look at the www.dietdoctor.com website for ideas on how to low carb, menus, shopping lists and articles.

Even if you end up on insulin with a T1 diagnosis, sticking to low carb in the interim will help you feel less dreadful.

It is certainly worth getting tested for other types of diabetes, but about 10% of T2s are not overweight at diagnosis.
I hope your GP, etc are supporting you.
Note that if you decide to go low carb to reduce blood sugar you can increase your unprocessed/low processed fats to maintain your weight - cheese, butter, oily salad dressings, double cream, etc.

Hello again @KK123 hope you are ok? I’ve been taking your advice and my numbers are generally a lot better (lots in the green (6.5-8.5) in my app). I am getting a few readings which I thought were a bit high considering what I had eaten but as I’m new to this wasn’t sure?! Could you advise. I’ve completely cut out carbs and feel a lot better already. Definitely less headaches and mood feels better. I expect it’s all in my head but the thought of carbs turns my stomach at the moment.

However after eating a meal of steak with salad and roasted tomatoes I was 9.6, last night I cooked baked aubergine with tomato sauce and cheese, ate with salad (14.5!!) and on waking yesterday I was at 9.2. The previous evening I had a plate of sliced runner beans (to substitute pasta) and a sauce with veg, then a few slices of Italian ham, olives, cheese.

In your opinion I am better to focus on average numbers rather than worrying about individual times of the day?

I’ve found a private dietitian and have an appointment with her on Tuesday so I’ll be interested to see what she recommends.

Thanks again for all your good advice!! You are definitely 100% more useful than my doctor!

Looks like tomatoes (whilst relatively low carb) when cooked might be causing you some issues.
Maybe try avoiding them for a week or so and see if your spikes reduce.

Be very interesting to hear what the dietician recommends .... some are very "on" the low carb train.. others will be horrified!

Hi Kay, did you manage to find out whether you actually were type 2 or 1 at all?, I'm guessing you haven't been able to yet as it can be a lengthy process. You mention having cut out carbs 'completely' but as @bulkbiker has said, there can be plenty of carbs 'hidden' in various sauces and vegetables, including tomatoes. For example, some sauces can contain over 4 teaspoons of sugar per portion so the effect of eating them unfortunately, is the same as having 4 sugars in your tea or a chocolate eclair. Having said that, it does sound like your levels are still too high given your current 'low carb' diet. Waking at 9.2 is an issue as well and your level of 14. I go back to our previous posts really, if I was you I would get those extra tests done. It's very hard to adopt a strategy if you don't know what you are dealing with. What is a days diet for you right now, and when is your next hb1ac? As for the private dietician, I can pretty much guarantee she/he will prescribe a diet FULL of brown carbs! x

Out of interest what were you drinking those nights?

And yes I find roasted peppers (supposedly low carb) spike me as do tomatoes in quantity. I can get away with one or 2 cherry ones raw but that's it. Botanically tomatoes, peppers aubergines are fruit and many varieties these days are bred and grown for their sweetness.
I still eat them however, in moderation, as I want the other nutrients, vitamins and variety.

It's worth you testing similar meals again to be sure

Hi there,

Sorry, yes I should have said low carb, I just meant I’d cut out bread/pasta/rice/cereals. Not been back to the doctor to have further tests and I’m not due for another hb1ac test until mid/end June.

I am making any sauces I eat, the tomato sauce I make is just a tin of tomatoes, water, basil and a little olive oil. However I can see how is still contains sugars particularly when cooked. I really hope the dietitian doesn’t recommend brown carbs as I obviously can’t cope with them. As I’m paying for the session I’ll be unhappy if she does!

I’m still waiting for my scan, after that if things are no clearer I suppose I need to go back to my dr and push for more tests.

As for my diet I’ll have eggs and avocado or Greek yoghurt and a few berries for breakfast, soup or a salad with tuna/chicken or goats cheese/feta for lunch and for dinner, a piece of fish or meat with salad or green veg, or a homemade veg sauce with runner beans (my pasta substitute). I suppose it’s just trial and error for now .

Thanks again for all your advice xx

Mmm that makes sense, I’ll keep testing and make a record. I’m just drinking water or tea. Sometimes water with a tiny bit of sugar free cordial in it.

Certainly worth checking you don't have a different type of diabetes, but estimates are that 10% of type 2s are normal weight at diagnosis.
Meanwhile, low carb suits all types as far as I know. The way to avoid unwanted weight loss is to add more fats as they are burned for energy, so add oil based salad dressing, butter on the green veg, some nuts, double cream, cheese, etc. and switch to full fat milk and full fat Greek yogurt.

Thank you that makes sense. I’ve always had full fat milk and yoghurts, and I do use butter and also olive oils dressings. It’s good to know I can continue with them x

Hi @KayLS well done for taking advice from those before, it's first class. A dietitian will most likely tell you to eat the brown foods "we" have found do not work, they follow guidelines. These foods are just sugar molecules in another form.

I thought I would add that Metformin aids weight loss, so may not be the best for you.

I e and to drop tomatoes. Absolutely adore them but my body can’t tolerate them. Although to be fair my body doesn’t tolerate a lot of things now, If I was low carb then they’d be ok but I’m super low at 10g of carbs a day, a typical sized tomato is 4g
