Hi
Diagnosed this week after 1.5 stone weight and muscle loss.. feeling so tired and just want so energy!
Doing blood sugars 4 times daily and they are between 13 and 18... so scared and worried and just need to get these down before damage is done inside. Now in metformin twice daily., and started low carb/sugar immediately as I done that way of eating previously for 4 years.
Just very scared at this moment, feel very low and tearful. Amy help is appreciated . Donna z

Your weight loss would support you may need more tests done to see what type of diabetes you have - a c-peptide and GAD antibody tests. What is your BMI? In the short term, the high sugars won't cause lasting damage and will come down when they get your diagnosis and medication right.

High sugars continuously above 13 mmol/l for an extended period of time are only dangerous if you are an undiagnosed type 1 and you're unwell and your ketones build up because your body has stopped producing insulin. That's why it's important you get the right diagnosis. Please phone your surgery. If your BMI is below 25 you should qualify for a referral to a specialist. If you are feeling unwell phone 111.

Have you been definitely diagnosed as type 2, as weightloss is more like type 1 or one of its variants.
If you do not see a response to cutting down on carbs then that ought to ring alarm bells for your GP to do further tests if not done already.
If you are type two and nothing more interesting, then cutting out high carb foods should result in lower blood glucose which you can adjust easily by altering what you eat.
Reducing in steps rather than drastically would be wise, as a rapid drop can result in unwanted effects, even damage to the eye due to the rapid alteration of sugar in the fluids.

Hi
Thank you for replying, my BMI is around 20, she tested my ketones upon diagnosis and ok she said not type 1. I’ve only been on metformin since Thursday so I’m probably expecting miracles, but every ache , twitch etc I’m now panicking incase it’s done damage.

GP's aren't type 1 experts. Not having ketones at that moment in time is not conclusive evidence for you not being type 1. The referral pathway is BMI under 25 and weight loss. You absolutely qualify for a referral to a specialist for further testing. You may have to push for it. If you keep getting readings like 18, I would recommend phoning 111 and they would take this seriously. As @ert says, you are very unlikely to have done any damage, but if you turn out to be Type1, more than a week could cause ketoacidosis and a stay in hospital. I sympathise with your fear of injecting yourself, but after a few, you will be unlikely to give it further thought. I was shamed into doing it in the days of glass and metal "road drills" and soon realised the freedom I had gained. Good luck with whatever transpires.
