Hope you are feeling better.

I'm afraid progs like that simply wind me up these days.. so many half or mistruths and mainly misleading based on old or poor studies and data.

My view is that seed oils are best avoided totally. Use butter or animal fats instead.

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Puzzled again.
I thought cold pressed extra virgin olive and rapeseed oils were fine.
Chemically processed ones not as good.

well not now i saw many patients who use to visit us with such senario, trying keto on their own.

Jonesmia - Did those people you describe visit a cardiologist about their lipid profiles, or any other specialist professional?

Rapeseed used to be a nonprofit crop that was sown between seasons as lovage to fix atmospheric nitrogen. It was not sold because it is dangerous to both humans and animals, and is poisonous especially to ruminants, When the mustard flowers bloomed the crop would be ploughed into the field as a natural fertiliser in the interests of sustainable farming using crop rotation.

It is high in erucic acid, which is poisonous to us, but Big Ag found that if you process it in various caustic chemicals, then this can neutralise the poisons into a form that can be filtered out and then we get Veg Oil or Canola. The original Canola apparently killed many in USA, Canada, and Spain before they finalised the industrial process needed to crack the oil to make it edible. There was a time when Canola was banned worldwide, but now it is available everywhere.

The expensive Canola Oil contains vitamins A and E, but the normal supermarket brands are vitamin-free zones and totally bereft of anything healthy. It contains mainly Omega -9 and Omega-6 oils but very little of the healthy Omega-3 oils. Contrary to some of the hype I have seen, it is a polyunsaturated oil and does contain saturated fats Olive Oil seems to be a healthier oil to use if you need an animal-free product.

It is illegal to run your diesel car on vegetable oil, but is possible apparently. It could be a more appropriate source of sustainable fuels but uses mucho mucho land acreage. Meanwhile, the fields are suffering lack of fertilizer that has to be provided by ammonia-based industrial Haber-Bosch processes that use large amounts of energy.

It is possible on a Diesel engine with something like a 50/50 mix? Used cooking oil can be used but needs filtering or could block the fuel filters & lines.
The legality of it it.? Is down to whether the "duty" has been paid for the oil used to run the vehicle on the road. Which is where the driver could get caught out.. ;) Tax evasion in short.

Agree. I have often wondered where the chip buttie smell was coming from in traffic. Apparently, Wartburgs run quite well on it even though not diesel. Fartburgs more like, and you can follow the smoke rings down the road. It is a question of money- save some, evade some, spend some more in fines.

I have to admit to seeing the effects of residue from seed oils on commercial kitchen surfaces in the past that would make a garage look like an "operating theatre."
Now the carsonagenic properties with non stic Teflon gets mentioned but no-one has thought or brought up what is commonly used oil wise in conjunction in the frying pan?

Come to think of it. Doesn't the fried egg & bacon get a finger pointed too..? ;)

I believe that in the UK, at least, most rapeseed grown for consumption is bred to be naturally low in erucic acid rather than requiring industrial processing to remove erucic acid from the the oil. https://ahdb.org.uk/erucicacid

Guess it depends what you mean by "fine" ?
Less toxic than others or completely harmless.. I'd say the jury is still out.

That may be changing

An associated article on low erucic use in the UK, also seeing a new problem
https://ahdb.org.uk/erucicacid

France and Germany have moved their rapeseed oil production into the biodiesel market, and have started replacing their Canola Plant (LEAP) fields with standard brassica rapeseed stock. Canada and the USA use a LEAP variant that is not perennial, and needs replacing from seed stock every year, Much of this stock is now GMO. The UK cannot import Canola Plants because of this but can import the harvested output for processing as a LEAP product. There is a high risk of GMO contamination as reported in the Agriculture journal this year (too big to upload on here)

So genetically engineered?

Still have to ask why it is "needed" at all..
Rapeseed oil in the UK and the EU is not GM, it is just selectively bred in the same way that cattle, sheep and pigs are.

Hence why I said "genetically engineered"..
So if you don't object to genetically engineered meat, because that is what has happened over centuries, why is a problem with plants?

All. A reminder that the thread is about rapeseed oil. Please stick to the topic.

If a wider discussion on GM/genetic engineering in a broader range of foods is wanted, please start a new thread in the appropriate sub-forum.
