Had bad hyper Monday / tuesday BG 33.5+ I’ve been running high for 1year and half mostly round 20 mark usually have lots of humalog to bring me down when I’m that high around 100 units .only had 20 units in pen forgot to take new one out of fridge .I noticed blood falling very quick within 5 mins they went to 10.2 in that time lowest I’ve been this year which is great news then yesterday I hovered around 13 Very good day for me this morning I woke up BG 11.3 don’t quite understand what’s going on as not seen these figures for over a year and half I’ve done nothing different except lower dose of insulin anyone had similar thing

Hi,

It's pretty unusual in my experience for BGs to drop that quick after an insulin correction injection.
Are you certain your meter is working properly?
There's normally a bit of "lag" with a meter reading too. Showing BGs around 20 minutes ago?

This is where I think we really need some insulin dependent T2s to comment....

AS a T1 with a bit of insulin resistance, I definitely find that I need much more insulin to reduce my levels if my bg goes high, and it seems quite happy to stick at 11 or 12 if I don't manage to chase it down.

So I can imagine that once you've got it down to saner levels then you might need less insulin to keep them there.

But the big question is why did the smaller dose of insulin work?

Some possibilities:
1 You've just recovered from a long lasting illness that you've had for the last 18 months or so. Long covid???
2) Injection site issues. Have you been injecting somewhere you had a lot of lipotrophy and just found a "good" site?
3) And this is a real stretch. If you're on lantus could you have injected lantus by mistake and had a lantus low? (On the rare occasions where I've had lantus lows it acts much faster than humalog and plummets my bg down.)

Of course, as a T2 you may or may not still be producing your own insulin so I don't know whether it's possible for your pancreas to suddenly give you an extra dose???

I assume you hadn't changed your diet at all? Lower carbs?

I must admit I'm pretty out of ideas, To repeat, I think you need input from some insulin dependent T2s who might have a better understanding of the whole insulin resistant bit.

I have to admit, I'd be feeling pretty uncomfortable with BGs in the 20s even.
So I'm glad you managed to bring them down. :) (All be it not understanding how...)

Myself being T1, if my levels was to go "rogue," I don't find I need "extra" correction using Novorapid due to resistance.
I find I can see a BG turn around in about an hour, before a steady lowering..

@EllieM has some good ideas which could be contributory?

Could you have possibly consumed alcohol?

Cold weather, angry people, queues,
I have commented recently about this but I have noticed if I wake up with a high bg say 12 and give myself 4 extra Novo rapid it might go up to 17 within an hour , but if I give myself 2 extra units it will come down to say 6 within 1 hour and have only recently noticed if I give myself 17 units of my long acting insulin instead of my usual 18 i'me almost always within range when I wake in the morning which is good because I then don't have to give a correction dose and makes a good starting point for the day .

Hi jaywalk I’ve tried all sorts of amounts of insulin basal and bolus doses went as high as 1.000 units a day last year still didn’t work consultant says I’m severe insulin resistant

Well pain certainly pushes bgs up, so could well explain the ultra high reading.

But still struggling to understand how a relatively (for you) low dose of insulin could be more effective than a high one. Are you able to ask your clinic for advice? Obviously it would be wonderful if this effect were repeatable but am struggling to understand how it works. (And @jaywak I too have been told to decrease lantus slightly by my specialist in order to improve control, though at the time I didn't have a cgm so don't know what was happening at night. ) Maybe an effect of your gall bladder pain???
