@Annb - how are you feeling now? Catching up on the posts, you seem to be very up and down again. Em and eating is like my eldest grandson. He's a grazer as well.
I mentioned taking the boys to WeeHailes last Friday. It's a great place but it makes me nervous too. There's a lot of these Mummy types that take their little ones into the area for the bigger children then let them toddle loose while they focus on their similar "Mummy Friends". It's not for the faint hearted in that section and I'm a nervous wreck watching little ones toddle into areas where 9/10 year old are hurtling down a fireman's pole! They'd be the first to complain loudly if their little one was injured. I also had to try to get grandson's to speak quietly as the eldest kind of quietly asked "why is that boy wearing a skirt?". I suggested that it might be a girl? Youngest announced not so quietly "No that's a boy on he has a girl's flowery skirt on!". In days gone by Mummy would have been a flower power hippy type.
@Antje77 - bubbling soup is definitely to be avoided!

Had a packet of ready salted crisps (for me, a good standbye to settle my stomach, I've found) and some more fizzy water and dozed a while in the kitchen chair and am feeling quite a lot better, thanks. That Stevia is dangerous stuff! For me, that is. For others it's probably a life saver.

BG's a bit up, but that's the crisps. I'll have to give it a rest (eating, that is) to let my stomach recover but almost back to normal otherwise. Definitely low carb, if I eat again today.

I was reminded in an early morning showing of a food programme - can't remember the title, but they did an investigation into nitrates/nitrites in processed meat and that reminded me that I was trying to get away from ham and bacon, as well as sausages so, I was wondering why I don't just have unprocessed pork for breakfast, instead of bacon. That's why I bought pork at the butcher's today; to be sliced very thinly and served with eggs. Another experiment. I'm sure people have done it before, but I haven't. Not tonight, though. Maybe tomorrow morning.

No 2 son was in a short time ago. He's just had the strimmer/brush cutter repaired so will have to find some time to get the grass and briar roses cut down. I told him he should just keep a sheep or a goat in the garden to do that for him. He didn't like the idea of yet another animal in the household, so doesn't want to do that. But it got me thinking - he could keep a sheep for about 18 months and then get it slaughtered to provide lamb for the freezer (Lewis lamb is always about 18 months old due to small size). But I have a feeling that the family doesn't like lamb anyway. But maybe I could keep a lamb in their garden for 18 months. I do like lamb. And I have recently discovered that for the last 3 years, the abattoir in Stornoway has been operating for 5 months of the year (Aug to Dec). It's a thought. Must run it past him. Or perhaps I could buy an alpaca for Em. They seem to do quite well here. But it would probably require a companion. And I don't think they come very cheap.

Well. Here we are again. It's 3.20 am and I've been up for 50 minutes. I've taken Co-codamol, put a steroid cream on my legs (which are very sore and hot just now) and had a cup of tea. BG is 13.5. Feeling a bit fed up just now because my "restless legs" have kicked in. Should I inject some insulin, I ask myself, to try to bring the BG down and see if I can doze off.

Just turned on that food programme I was talking about - "Food Unwrapped". Might take my mind off it. At present it is about gin, which doesn't actually interest me, being teetotal. So I'm turning to you guys to give me something to think about.

I made some oxtail soup yesterday to use the meat I bought on Tuesday - didn't really intend to buy it, but we don't always see oxtail here, so it was an opportunity not to be missed. I stewed it until I went to bed, so had to leave it to cool and it is smelling wonderful right now. Looking forward to that later today.

The Co-codamol is beginning to take the edge off the restless legs, so I might get some rest now.

BG started to fall after breakfast and is now 5.6 (13.10). Restless legs got better - they usually do under the influence of Co-codamol - not that I take the Co-codamol for that; it helps the painful joints. Beginning to feel a bit peckish, and the oxtail is calling. I didn't make a start on the cupboards yet - I sat down with a cup of tea after breakfast and woke up around 12.30. Just got the dishwasher sorted out and I will make a start on the cupboards shortly - need to rest the joints just now as the painkiller has worn off.

I don't think you can eat alpaca?

No, but then again, I don't suppose Em would be happy to have me eat what, after 18 months, would be a pet lamb. Her Dad agrees, so he'll just have to try to keep the grass down with a strimmer.

Existing on fluids just now. Yesterday I had just some of the oxtail, but no stew or broth and by evening I thought I should use up the veg soup I had left in the fridge. It tasted and smelled fine, but either my sense of smell and taste hasn't come back to normal yet, or there was no indication that it was off. My stomach seems to know better than my taste buds and I spent the rest of the night with my stomach ejecting the offensive stuff. So far today just had some water and some ginger tea. Just about to try ordinary tea.

The cupboard clearing didn't get very far yesterday. The first one I emptied had mould growing on its back wall so, with everything out and spread around the kitchen, I washed it down with a bleach solution and, once it was dry Neil put a first coat of anti-mould paint on it and then a second one this morning. Can't put the shelves and their contents back in yet, so I'm sitting in a disaster area.

Em came in to show me a huge bag of vintage marbles she'd bought on e-bay. Around 200+. I hadn't realised that she had started a collection of vintage marbles, but she now has abut 220, with the new ones. It was a surprise that she appreciates the colours and styles and how they are made. She constantly surprises me with what is going on in her enquiring mind.

Finally got that cupboard sorted out, everything washed and replaced and in better state than it has ever been. But that's all I've done. No energy left to do the next one yet. Up at one o'clock but I did go back again and slept again until 2.30. Then up, put some washing on, put away some of the stuff from the cupboard and then sat down again for a rest - and a doze, dreaming because I left the TV on and the sound from that was infiltrating into my dreams. Not a happy dream because I was having to cook a meal for someone and kept finding that I didn't have the ingredients required.

I'm sure everyone has heard of finding a cat inside the bonnet of a car, enjoying the heat from the engine. Neil went out, tried to start the car (we have problems with the battery losing power). It didn't start so he got the alternative battery and opened up the bonnet. There was a fully grown wild rabbit sitting on top of the engine! It soon made itself scarce but how it managed to squeeze through the narrow gaps to reach the top of the engine, we have no idea.

@DJC3 how is Denis doing? I have 2 scavengers and have been to the vet more than once after they have eaten something detrimental to dog health!
It is an expensive over sight but in my opinion they are worth every penny!

Thank you for asking, we are still waiting for the vet to ring. They kept him in all today which has worried me a bit as I thought he’d be coming home this morning. I keep telling myself that no news is good news - they would certainly have phoned to discuss treatment and cost if he’d taken a turn for the worse.
He is a terrible scavenger which is why I’m so upset with myself for leaving the chocolate where he could reach it.
I agree with you though- they are worth every penny.

Wow, that was a very lucky rabbit, choosing the one car with a dodgy battery!

Em and her school friend (who lives just across the road from us) have seen a rabbit a few times, sitting underneath the car - they decided to call it Wilbur. It may be the same one which is used the to sheltering there. Just shows how cold it has been here when even a wild rabbit wants to sit on a warmish, sheltered engine. Don't know who was more surprised - Neil or the rabbit.

As @maglil55 commented a few days ago, my BGs seem to be very much up and down again. I thought I had it sorted, but, as before, the improvement didn't last. BGs still high in the mornings, despite taking a correction dose and then an early breakfast to try to keep it under control. Then it drops in the afternoon most days, until I eat again and that makes it rise again towards evening. Whatever I do, doesn't seem to have any effect long term. The only thing I can see to do is up the insulin again. Don't want to do that. Nothing came of the consultation with the specialist from Glasgow (diabetes nurse did the consultation, not me). I am currently eating almost zero carbs, all to no effect. I accept that I am odd, but that's not news. Feeling a bit irritated with myself at present but just too tired to try to think of anything else to do about it all. Not depressed, just tired.

Once again, Neil had to change the battery in the car before going to town and was amused to show me that some of the engine had fur on it - that rabbit must have been squeezing through some very small spaces indeed - probably trying to find a way out.

I'm trying to have something to eat quite early along with a meal-sized dose of insulin, to see if that will keep the BG down a bit. And I think I might set an alarm on the Libre sensor at a relatively low level to make sure I can tell when it is beginning to rise and take action before it does. Don't know if that will work, but it is worth trying. This morning's early start meant that I had my breakfast about 7 am and that kept BG down below 10 until around 10 am. Will have to work on that.

I'm about to start another catch up but I did skim to the end to see how Dennis was doing. Glad to see he's home and recovering. Son & DIL'S dog Lincoln is a terrible scavenger too. He ended up in the **** Vet a while back, at night, on a drip! Food bit etc kept well out of his way now.

Have to post this. My niece (the one that was over from Australia to care for her Dad) has been back a few weeks. She decided to take her younger son to the cinema on the last day of the holidays. This is the cinema! No one else was there. It was only when I looked the second time I spotted the tiny, lonely head that's her son! The laugh was the went to see Quiet Space 2 - it was certainly that!

Well, what a to-do! Car didn't start again, but the spare battery was employed and it did, so no delay getting to the dentist. Once there, a different dentist saw me but there seem to have been some crossed wires because her plan was to take impressions for dental plates and have them ready for the afternoon, when she would take my teeth out. She was very puzzled when I told her that the impressions were taken at my last visit and a hunt ensued for the record of what was done. End result - they found the plate they had had made for the bottom jaw, but not for the top jaw and that meant she went ahead and removed the wonky tooth on the bottom and fixed a fairly temporary plate into place. Feels very odd. But it was quick and painless.

Back out to the car, which refused to start. Battery drained again. It must be the alternator, despite the garage not being able to find any fault with it last time they looked for the problem. Tried calling No 2 son. No answer. So I had to get a taxi to get Neil and me home. (That sounds ungrammatical "Neil and me" but by my reckoning, it should be correct.) Once home, managed to get hold of DIL, who got hold of No 2 son, so he'll take us, and the spare battery back for my 2nd appointment. And if Neil can't get the car going, he'll bring us home again and the garage will just have to come out to pick up the car. This is proving to be an expensive dental appointment.

My Libre just pinged me to tell me my BG is too low, so I'd better do something about it.
