Hello and welcome. I'm glad you are having a c peptide test. Let us know the result. The type of diabetes really matters when giving suggestions.

It must be very frustrating to try hard and not get results. A banana would spike me but I really don't know how as it isn't part of my diet anymore.

Good luck and let us know the results of the tests.

Brettskee, you state that you ate nothing for a whole week! That is a starvation diet, and could cause serious health problems!

It's really good that you are getting the cpeptide test. If your bgs are high because of lack of insulin then you should feel a lot better once that issue is addressed.

Are you still in hospital? I am not a doctor but I am very concerned that you basically haven't eaten anything for a week and a half. Have you had a glucose drip or anything like that? Or the medical team addressing your food (lack of) issues?

Hi @Brettskee, nothing much to add really but I don't think we can blame the 'killer' banana for 18 months of high glucose and your current health issues and hospital procedures. It's very hard to focus purely on your preferred diet choices whether low carb or not, when you are in & out of hospital, in pain and discomfort and probably weak as well. No doubt they will be wanting you strong for any future operations as well so if I were you I would carry on doing my best to eat a little something that you can cope with (gall bladder wise) even if it is higher carb than you'd normally eat, such as a banana and then when you are a little better you can hopefully get back to some sort of normality and approach and get some answers as to why you have been so high for so long. Don't be made to feel bad about a banana as it seems that's all you can get down, the alternative may be to starve! x

Ask your consultant about medication options including insulin to help bring your blood sugars down. If you end up being type 2, after your c-peptide test, you may not need to be on medication such as insulin long term.

While carbs in food is the 'usual suspect', high BG can be caused by many things:
infection
injury
stress
lack of sleep
medication including statins and steroids

perhaps its a case of your liver being 'helpful'. Yes, many have a bad Dawn Phenomenon where liver puts glucose (from its stores) into blood stream in order for you to hunt/gather your cave dweller's breakfast! In some (including myself) BG can keep rising even though no food is consumed (just water). In my case any zero-carb meal will stop the process (liver realises it's effort is no longer needed).
