Pancreas has “shrunk” !

I recently had a pancreatic MRI. The good news is that I don’t have pancreatic cancer, gallstones or blocked bile ducts. But what the MRI did show was that my pancreas has “shrunk” which might explain why I’m producing less insulin and also enough enzymes to get the full benefit of any food I consume. More investigations are ongoing …. and I show no outgoing symptoms.

What I’d like to know is if anyone else has been diagnosed with a shrinking pancreas. And I’d like to know as to why you think it happened, what were the consequences that affected you and how were you treated.

I’ve just started Tresiba at 14 units daily to make up my insulin shortfall and my BS is falling nicely. But a shrinking pancreas is a new phenomenon to me.

I had an Mri many years ago and it showed a shrunken pancreas, I just assumed it was because I had been diabetic for forty plus years type 1 so I don't produce any insulin, I have had many more Mir,s but they have never mentioned my pancreas again

Roy Taylor's research showed that a shrunken pancreas is common in people with Type 2 - but that with two years of remission, it can regrow. I found this very encouraging. For some reason the forum isn't letting me post a link to the research, but give it a Google!

Thx Peter & Zoe - much appreciated.

My Specialist Diabetes Nurse said it was a common factor but wasn’t fully understood. She also said that it doesn’t alter any treatment plan when administering insulin for either T1 or T2. Not everyone gets a pancreatic MRI when diagnosed which I think is a pity.
