Testing Advice

Hi everyone!

New to this and not diagnosed (yet) sorry for the long post!

I am always asked by healthcare workers if I have diabetes. Mainly due to all the symptoms that match. I have been tested in the past but diabetes has always been ruled out. A couple years back I got diagnosed with PCOS so all my symptoms were put down to that.

However for years I have had foot problems. I had put on a lot of weight at one point so blamed my weight for my foot problems. Recently it has got so bad I can’t walk for any length of time. NHS refusing to do anything because of covid. Podiatry in my area is STILL not open and now has a 2 year wait and counting. I opted to go to a podiatry place near me and the girl was very concerned. I’m not sure of meanings but she said my feet have collapsed/are collapsing in a few areas, they are changing shape but most worryingly she thinks I have Charcot feet? She urged me to demand blood tests with my GP and after a fight I have been booked in.

My concern is I am always borderline. I always test borderline for hypothyroidism, anaemia, and several others. My fasting blood test is booked for the afternoon, but the GP said it’s usually the morning so is this something that could alter results ?

Hope this makes sense!!

Hi Nina29. If your fasting blood test is for diabetes, it is usually a morning appointment because you can shift breakfast until afterwards. An afternoon appointment might mean that you feel a need to eat? If the test is for something else then I'm unsure. Sorry. Not much help :(
Anyone else?

If they are testing you for diabetes then I would expect them to do an hba1c, which is time of day independent. If your GP is asking for something that needs a fasting test (eg cholesterol?) I'd contact them for clarification.

Hi,

The GP said I am having a ‘fasted blood glucose test’ if that helps ?

thanks guys :)
Then you have to avoid eating until after the test Nina, although I think you may be able to have tea/coffee but not entirely sure. I just have water. x

Charcot foot is a very serious condition. If your podiatrist thinks you are beginning to develop it I urge you to INSIST your GP inspect your feet properly or send you to a specialist, as soon as possible. Good luck.
