Insulin Dosage

Hi there,

I'm still learning about using insulin, so please forgive me if this seems like a daft question.

I'm on Lantus/NovoRapid. So far, it is working well while watching my carbs.
However, I wonder if, when I have more carbs as a one-off, do I just increase the pre-food dose of NovoRapid?

I plan to have a portion of chip shop chips which is completely different to my 100g or less of carbs a day.

I normally have 4 units before every meal and this makes everything well but rarely eat more than 25g of carbs at one time.

Surely then, if I inject 5 units before the chips, it would be better as the food in question is carbs.

Any insight is great!

The whole point of the basal/bolus regime (ie the long acting and the fast acting insulins) is that you can indeed adjust the bolus/fast-acting dose (Novorapid in your case) for the amount you eat,

However it normally helps if you get some advice from your doctor/specialist about adjusting it if you don't know how to adjust or don't know your carb/insulin ratio - do you know your carb ratio? I'm guessing you haven't talked to your doc/specialist about dose adjustments?

You really need to to know your Bolus / Carb ratio. With that you can vary your Bolus to the correct amount for your meal.

If you have not been through this with your specialist or doctor you really need to get with them to understand it and go through with them, really important part of understanding been on Insulin.

Thank you for that.
I'm due to see a specialist in December but in the meantime, have been kind of left to my own devices.
Incidentally, I did share a small portion of chip shop chips with my mum but also had a ring doughnut. I had a colposcopy this morning, so thought sod it! I took my usual 4 units of NovoRapid beforehand. 2 hours after eating, I had a reading of 6.4! I am amazed
