Hi all, I'm Jack, 19 years old (20 next week, getting old!), diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last Thursday, in shock from finding out, I wasn't expecting it, although it's good that I now know what's been making me feel like **** for this last year. Doctors been useless for information, feel like I'm left in the dark, don't really know what todo, I am having a hospital appointment next week with the diabetes team, but then again, will they be much use for information?

Cheers, Jack.

Hi Jack, read as much as you can Type 1 is a marathon not a sprint.

Get yourself stable with the diabetics team.

Ask questions, the Type 1's on this forum have a wealth of information and are very helpful.

Once you stable and have some questions I find that this website is simple but really good as designed with children with Type 1 in mind but really useful

take care

Hi jack! Sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
I was diagnosed aged 15 I am now 26 if you have any questions or concerns drop me a message ! I am sure the diabetes team will be able to give you the right guidance , at the end of the day it’s us that has to deal with it 24:7 . But it is best to ask as many questions as you can it will take some time to get all the information in but don’t put to much pressure on your self! Main point is you can now get your self feeling better again and focus on keeping your body healthy :) ! You’ve got this!

How are you doing now then ? I hope you are feeling a bit less uncertain about things if you have seen one of the Diabetic Specialist nurses at the hospital. Being told you're diabetic is a big shock for everyone, but the uncertainty about what this means in practical terms and how to handle things certainly doesn't help. Once they have run their tests and sorted out treatment, you should be feeling more like your usual self. Just put a question on this forum if you suddenly realise you need extra info. We've all been in your situation, at whatever age we were diagnosed. Good luck for the future and my best wishes.

Welcome Jack, I hope you're not related to Nick :D The diabetes teams are normally great. You'll be in good hands!

Hi Jack welcome to the club that nobody really wants to be in ! I had a bit of a grin when you said you’re getting old at 20 lol.
The diabetic team will be of help to you , and should have all the information you need , it’s a daunting prospect at first but believe me and many others who say it will get better/ easier to understand the total information overload you will feel at the beginning, , as it’s been previously said , it’s a marathon not a sprint , so just take small steps in the beginning and soon you’ll be running along like us “ old timers” , you will quickly find out what works for you and what doesn’t , probably the best thing you can do is talk about things ! On here is great as any problems you have you can guarantee that someone here has experienced the same thing or something very similar , Good luck on your journey and don’t be a stranger
