Afternoon all, i hope we are all well

Just joined and thought id say hello, its so difficult to get answers to the all so many questions...

I was diagnosed 5 months ago with type 2 after being unwell . I had bloods then was sent again as it was very high and they thought it was a fluke , it came back as ac1 79 so it was quite high. I'm self employed so my lifestyle is hectic as prob most are .

Been put on metformin 2 morning 2 night , and had bloods a month ago but still same .

I wanted to make a difference with diet but soon slipped into same pattern ,my problem is fizzy Coke and crisps ...
.

But recently struggling and being unwell and now have hearing loss in one ear , doc gave me amoxocillin without seeing me but over 7 days now so I've a f2f this Wednesday.

Hopefully some more answers . Looking forward to speaking to you all

Thanks

Simon

Have a good search round here. I got my self out of diabetic numbers jnto normal range but slipped up seriously over lock down so I feel your pain.

I changed to salted nuts to try and beat the crisp urge and I'm lucky I've never drunk fizzy pop of any kind. The nuts are better carb wise but not to consume in great amounts.

Keto cheese crackers are easy to make with just grated cheese and almond flour. They have been very useful to have made.

I found the first and dramatic change to diet after diagnosis easy as I had lots of nasty symptoms. My tricky point was when they had gone I could eat what I liked again.... obviously not, but Tey persuading my carb addicted brain that!

Hi and welcome. You must keep the carbs down in your diet. You can have Fats and Proteins to make up and keep you feeling full. If you want fizzy drinks make sure they are sugar free. If you want a snack have fruit berries, a lump of cheese, nuts etc

Antibiotics may well raise your bg whole you are on them too.

I'd suggest starting to test you own blood glucose @Rachox has some info she will give you. I found once I could see instantly (or within 2 hours) what certain foods were doing to my bg I dropped those foods like hot potatoes ...
This may well help with the snacks and crisps.

You need to majorly cut down on carbs overall

Welcome to the forum and feel free to read around and ask whatever you need to. We were all beginners once

Hi @Latics and welcome to the forum, thanks for the tag @MrsA2 .

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews if you use this link and select the meter plus 5 packs of strips and then add the code dcuk (all lower case) at check-out, you’ll get the meter free. So total cost for meter + 5 x 50 strips will be £31.76.

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

Links to the strips and the meter for future orders:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively.

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

Discount codes for the Code Free strips

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + found here:

with the strips found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...py-of-tee2-test-strips?variant=19264017367097

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

With more expensive strips is their Caresens Dual, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/collections/caresens-dual

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hello and welcome,

I agree with the advice to get a meter as that will help you determine how different foods affect your levels.

I also agree read around here. It seems a lot to take on board at first but I can promise you this is a large group of very helpful and amazing people who do understand. Feel free to ask questions, seek advice or just vent. I certainly did my share of venting at first.

I have found the approach that has worked for me is to dramatically lower my carb intake. I am a carb addict and I find the lower my intake the lower my cravings but that is just me.

I also suggest diet doctor- it gives a lot of ideas to help reduce your carb intake.

Welcome and good luck- let us know if we can help.
