How much insulin do you take?

My little girl, who's 3years old and weight around 18KG, have a daily amout of between 8-12 units.
I'd say this insulin dose thing used to bother me too, since I konw it may have certain relevance to insulin resistance, cholesterol gallstone and those other blah blah.
However, now I encourage her eat the same food as her elder brother does, in less amout of course, even for food like sucrose candies and ice creams that her doctors suggest not to. All I should do is to calculate and give more injection via the pump.
I don't want her feel like being treated un fairly, that's what concerns me most at this stage of her life. For little girl at her age, it's mission impossible to understand why she needs to follow trictly diet and her brother doesn't.
And even if one day she grow up and accept to have a very different dietary habit to keep excellent health, at least she'll have a very sweet childhood memory I guess.

She's so cute. I am happy to read she has an angel of a mother.

@Erin . It's lovely to see you on here. I've been hugely busy but do miss the regular members.
I got rid of all of my insulin injections. It hasn't been easy and I do produce on average a level of 800 on any C-peptide blood tests. In fact I haven't had one recently but may need one soon as I hv unexplained irratic 10+ bgs but with metformin or glimepiride I get hypos so I manage the 12s etc with glimepiride as and when I need to. One metformin tablet plays havoc with my digestive anomalies. I often wonder if its the cheap talc in them. In all my tablets in fact.
Everyone's health care has taken a hit it seems. I've been hugely lucky. I've been prepared to go to my appointments whereas some people hv had to change theirs last minute. Yep, wasted money for the UK NHS. I've only cancelled one appointment throughout the whole pandemic... to date. Very luckily. I don't ever take anything for granted.
Ive taken various insulins and in various amounts and like you hv had to eat occasionally when I've not wanted to, to avoid a hypo. It was necessary and I think has paid off.
My bigger picture now is to aid healthy weight loss until I'm no longer overweight. However I'll fill up on protein to keep my muscles large enough not to be weak. Or weaker than I feel from 2 traps in my nerves of my spine feeding my right arm and right leg.
Do you feel you should be using less insulin for future health? Like all other posters on this thread hv noted... It is what it is.... insulin need levels wise.
I was giving myself undue pressure to be no longer diabetic but I've accepted that I am still diabetic but maybe if I lose more weight I might become prediabetic or go into remission. I worry those educated into realising there is such a thing (even after decades of high bgs) it feeds their anxiety. Well it does mine.
Health anxiety can be ever consuming. So I make sure I do my best and do whatever I'm told to do from any specialist I'm under.
Do you think your managing well?
I feel I can manage insulin better than any other kind of high bg solution. No matter the circumstances. I hope that doesn't come over as being arrogant but I find insulin use far easier than any other tool for my diabetes. MY management rather than a nurses ideological way. My way looks after high bgs one at a time. Rather than insulin therapy in a plan. I only need plans to lose weight.
What do you need @Erin ?

Hi ickihun, thank you for the detailed post and your reflections of reducing insulin. Insulin dose is a bit of a mystery to me. I am presently reducing it from 40ishes to 30-33 to avoid night time hypos. I am also taking it in the morning now instead of at night. So far the blood sugars are about the same, despite the insulin change; maybe still too early; monitoring to find a safe range. Like you I have weak muscles. I really think I got worse in the tingling department since lithium discontinuation and then a psychiatrist's "dumb" reinstatement on divalproex and Latuda (both reported unacceptable for diabetics, d'0H!) and which I have discontinued according to GP suggestion and ER advice. Not manic or depressed yet. I have glyclazide for variables during the day. What do I need? Nice question: simplicity and an IT program for drug interactions. Cheers!

Interesting, that different insulins should have different effects; if I get a chance to meet a diabetician, that would be a good question. Thank you

I'm curious about members here taking insulin: your dose, time taken, type, if you are T1 or T2, side effects? I would like to compare your insulin treatment with mine and if you adjust it from time to time.
I take 40 units of Humulin at nightime, if my waking blood sugars are over 7 i take a top up, I am type2

Thanks for sharing. As a T1, I'm not that interested in the quantity of insulin, as we all need different amounts, but I am fascinated by the different insulins and regimes used, many of which are very different to those used by T1s, who typically either use an insulin pump or a basal/bolus regime (one or two doses of long acting insulin plus short acting insulin to cover meals and corrections).

Myself as well! I haven't been given much help with my insulin and have ended up in a not so great place between trying to figure out what I need to do myself while still clinging to the less useful advice from the doctor! It has made me feel so ill all the time, so I am desperately trying to figure something out.

@Erin I am currently adjusting and figuring out my doses, at the moment I am trying 24u long acting taken at night, I have just moved to this - I was on a morning dose, then split dose. I adjust my fast acting as I go - I use a 1:10 ratio for carbs and a 1:2 for correction, which seems to work for the most part, but until I get my long acting right it is hard to tell. I am LADA, still producing limited amounts of insulin, and do have insulin resistance - all of which have a direct impact on how much insulin I use (I am sharing this because I do find it interesting too, but for anyone reading, please keep in mind it is related to my unique case/needs).

The doctor has been trying to get me on a GLP-1 type medication as well, she initially said to replace the long acting, but now I see she has applied for a mixed GLP-1/long acting shot. I am not so keen to change, at least until I have had a chance to get my insulin dosing right!
Good luck with the new GLP-1 medication. It seems that insulin resistance is pretty widespread, regardless of the type of diabetes.
