Just joined. I have been type 2 diabetic for twenty years or so but a near fatal encounter with Covid around New Year meant I have now got to use insulin. That in itself is a minefield trying to work out the correct dose, what blood sugar levels can I achieve etc. Hopefully I will get there before too long.
I am now a "Used to be". Had many careers but Muscular Dystrophy took them away from me. Currently run a weather station , although I am not sure how much longer I can do that. Believe me retirement is not all it is cracked up to be.

Hello Everyone ,
New person on the block.
I have been recently diagnosed prediabetes last week and I am not sure that taken metformin is the right way to go for me. I already take three tablets a day one for my hypertension, cholesterol, and one for my depression, to which I have been suffering for over 20 years.

I concerned about that the "Metformin" will have an effect on those medications that I take. I am 60 years old and live on my own and very single, but would like to control my diabetes by the herbal route.

I am not the the best of cook but have purchased to cook books for who have diabetes, to which there are some very interesting recipes, which I shall have ago at cooking.

I’m Richard, an active 75 year old living in Altrincham. I am married to Jayne and we’re without children. We used to be cocker spaniel owners, several in fact and are currently thinking about another.
I am a retired self employed statistician and was a magistrate for 20 years.
I now volunteer regularly at Manchester Crown Court, supporting witnesses when they give evidence and families who have lost members of their family through crime. It’s a good job we do because the criminal justice system tends to ignore them until the moment they appear in court.
I support and am a season ticket holder at my local club, Manchester United (through thick and thin - pretty thin at the moment, but we had our time). I am also a Rugby League fan supporting Wigan Warriors.
I started to play the piano about 3 years ago as I have a real love of music of almost any genre. Classical and Opera lead the list, but I’m not immune to the attractions and immediacy of jazz, rock and pop, though Coldplay really leave me cold.
I have been healthy all my life until the last 12 months, but refuse to let my recent panic visits to hospital get me down. Fortunately I love a good book, fiction and non-fiction, and often have 3 or 4 on the go. Just finished Alan Cumming’s Not My Father’s Son, which was excellent.

Well, my name is Liz, female, from Hampshire and in shock. Last week, at the ripe age of 66 diagnosed as type 1, following an excursion to the horizontal, more than once, with DKA!
So I’m the oldest L plated pricker in town(!)
I had my retirement all planned out but now need to take this into account.
I was a nurse, love travelling, have a fabulous family and married to the long-suffering for 46 years.
Discovering that dealing with diabetes as a nurse does not prepare me for holding a diagnosis.
DUK is proving a godsend for me. Thank you

Thank you for your welcome. It is all very complicated though. Like being an alien crash-landing in Tescos. So much to learn in such a short time when the old brain is tucked away in the off position. Hopefully I’ll get there- it’s only been a month. My Diabetes Community Team are so good so that helps.
Keep up the amazing work xx

I do not have diabetes
- What is your name?

Amanda

- How old are you?

Depends on the time of day, as old as 20 first thing in the morning, frequently as old as 90 by 8pm. Having said that, being 54 the rest of the time is great as I am much bolder about not being constrained by other people’s views.

- Are you male or female?

I am female as far as I know, but I have been wrong about so many things, who knows?

- Which country are you from?

I live in the UK and only 10 miles from where I grew up.

- Which city/area do you live in?

In the countryside between Swindon & Oxford.

- Are you religious?

Tricky question.

- Pick three words to describe your personality.

Maverick, independent, complex

- Do you have any pets? I have a dog, but she is not really a pet, more a sort of house controller making sure we all do as she says.....

- Microsoft or Apple? Both

- Ever gone camping? Yes, last weekend, love it - when I get time!

- Favourite city?

Venice – I went there with Mum for what turned out to be her last birthday before she died, so it holds very special memories for me.

- Are you wealthy?

Gloriously; I have a roof over my head, food in my fridge and a dog by my side. Who needs more than that? I have not always been so lucky and I am grateful on a daily basis for everything I have.

- Do you work? If so, as what?

I am a Civil Servant 2 days a week and I try to get people to pay their invoices (credit control). The team I work with is wonderful and I am very lucky!

- List the subjects you study/have studied.

I am in my final (I hope!!!!) year of a BSc in Nutritional Science, and then later this year I will complete a diploma in Nutritional Coaching. These will be used alongside the Personal Trainer and Level 3 Health Referral specialist qualifications that I already have.

Hi all,

I'm Jacques and I'm here mainly because a family member has recently been diagnosed with type 2 and I wanted to find an active community to be able to find answers to all the different lifestyle ajustements that might happen in the next few months.

We currently live in Berlin, Germany. I work as a freelance product manager in software currently.

Looking forward to greet some of you. :)
