Hi thanks for replies again, taking any information on board, going to buy that book that juicyj says bright spots and landmines been having a look and seems some interesting things to try. Going to take it slowly but that low carb thing makes sense, will try looking for filling foods but low in carbs, as before most blood tests are coming back ok ish so hopefully not totally wrote off yet. as I've said quit alcohol for over a year and smoking a while longer, gave up coffee as prefered tea anyway, so going low carb should be ok already been doing it bit by bit. Not going to go mad as I've heard changing things to quickly and make things worse, just nice and steady so I feel safe etc and not to want to eat all the time when my sugars slowly start to come down. Got to put the time and effort in for once to get healthier, sounds really boring being a non drinker smoker low carber but don't need all my old habits just a simple life and to feel abit better that's all I need, so once again thanks again for your ideas etc il keep posting updates etc. And I am reading all posts and taking notes. so thanks again not to sound soppy but real do appreciate people's different views etc hopefully one day il be back on my feet again. Thanks.

Hi Danny - who cares about being boring any more, boring is the new cool - keeps you alive.

The book is free to download but sign up to his newsletter too, has tons of good advice.

Eating carbs is great if you can manage the spikes and your insulin dosing is spot on, but from my experience they cause issues, I can eat them when exercising but any other time I can’t control the prolonged highs and that causes me mental anxiety which makes t1 harder to manage, I prefer to low carb as I like seeing a graph that’s well controlled and in range, that gives me a massive boost then. It’s best to focus on stability and gradually reducing your bg levels.

What your doing is taking back control but you have got this Danny and you will get there.

If you need a fix of bread - LivLife bread only has 3.4g of carbs per slice.

Hi Danny,
Lots of good suggestions here already, especially that boring is the new cool. A simple life is great.
I’ve just popped in to say that if your eye drops contain steroids then they may well be affecting blood sugars. I wonder if it’s worth raising this with your diabetes team?

Me again, anyone have any ideas what to do, just a starting point would do. Already losing vision, now getting balance problems, numb feet etc, only 41 and feel like death, can certain insulin disagree with you, I take 2 background of levimir and around 4 or so nova rapid a day. I see a specialist but have no clue about ratios how to set background etc I just don't know anymore, had sugars daily in 20s over last year alone. hba1c over 100. Dread to think what damage is being done just seem to be getting worse but trying to hold on as much as I can. Everything seems we'll try this or you need to meet the criteria, average glucose over last month 22. And the meter I have just gives different readings one said 30 odd and a minute later it's 16. I just don't know any more.

Hello Danny, lots of good advice here. but I understand that it is very hard to put it all into practice when you are feeling so low. I hope that you feel a bit better soon but please make use of your diabetes team, they are the experts. Take someone along with you if possible as they can help you remember all your questions. When your blood sugars improve ask about having a pump (if you are happy to have one). I have had type 1 for 58 years and have had a pump for the last 13 years. My control and my life (at the age of 71) is so much better now than it has been previously.

Hi everyone again, Iam at the clinic tomorrow at 10am having a look at eating less carbs, going to ask about that Dafne course see if I can do it again, as it was years ago last time I did it. What's made it difficult I've had a lot of ops etc on eye and been on a huge amount of drops for eye pressure including timilol, dexafree, monopost, iopidine, and take a tablet called diamox to reduce pressure in the eye. Was being seen regular by eye clinic, then due to COVID wasn't seen for a long time and sort of left, was seeing flashing lights had a detached retina etc but they kept sending me to ae, after a long while of kept going they eventually found out what was happening and now there trying there best to save vision in my right eye, but I am not totally sure how much is diabetic related, or the side effects of the stuff I take. IE today legs keep going weak, faint dizzyness all-sorts so can't do much so back on the settee again. Unsure if its all diabetes but checked the side effects on the drops etc and sound very familiar,Been on these meds for nearly a year now and I am sure along with the diabetic team the meds are having an impact so at the minute I am reluctant to keep changing insulin over, hopefully should come off some soon. But been saying that for months. Just finding it more difficult as well concentrating on what needs to be done, other things going off, marriage failed, 13 year old dogs at Vets tommorow as can hardly walk so not looking good, along with my diabetic appointment later in the day, at eye injection clinic Friday, not sure if need one in my good eye this time or not, trying to work out about basal and bolus and low carb food, pre bolus. Absorption rates, or if I've injected into a fatty lump or whatever they are. I've asked whoever is in charge of this so called game of life what he wants me to do but got no answer yet, so for now it's just attend appointments get dogs to the vets, try and eat a low carb dinners and try not to put the central heating on too much.

just a suggestion:- when you arrive at the clinic ask if the consultant is there and ask to see him / her. You may get some answers to your problems, I hope so.

I know it's tough, I went through the same phase including the eyes which are still recovering and I said it in the last post also. You need to try and move around as much as possible . This has made a world of difference for me. I had a nice desk job before and my condition was getting worse. I decided to quit and got a company floor job with 30% paycut where I have to walk almost 13000 steps a day. I get to talk to shop floor employees all the time which keeps my mind busy on other things and this alone has helped my insulin sensitivity and my blood sugars have stabilised much better and I am happier even with the eye issues. Try going out is all I can say. Even if it's for a coffee a mile away. Fresh air and movement is necessary for human body.
