Or skip breakfast completely and give your body a rest...
Hi bulkbiker I used to skip a meal will give it try but has doctor has put me on Gliclizide just before Christmas and I take it before food I’m unsure what effect skipping a breakfast would do, wondering if I could take Gliclizide with my lunch if I skip breakfast. Would call doctor and ask but these days it’s all online and they close this about 10am so can’t speak with them today. Does anyone else do this waiting till you have first meal of day before taking Gliclizide???K

I to was on metformin about 10 years ago awful side effects one doctor who deals with diabetes at our surgery insisted I go on it again no b——y way the leg cramps were excruciating no matter what I did it was like a vice it took ages of stamping my feet rubbing calves no more Metformin for me. I spoke to another doctor and I’m on Gliclizide 80mg and no side effects but it’s not reducing my BG has I had hoped but I do believe if I can get the information on carbs protein and fat amounts I would give Keto a try but just remembered Keto caused gout in my left foot last time so I will have to do low carb. Finding it hard to to get all information I need to get my diet to work for me, has I said it’s been too long away from this site I don’t remember things like I used too, and making myself a prisoner in my own home for last 22months until recently hasn’t helped me at all is their a Low Carb site with right amounts of things to eat and what to avoid, and some recipes for a change of homemade soup salads omelette etcetera. There used to be lots of people on here with all kind of food ideas hope there are still lots still on here I’ve low carb cook books but find them with so many ingredients to buy too make them it’s too costly for one person there are Two other people to cook for in our bungalow one being our grandson on 12 hour shifts and quite fussy eater it makes things a lot more difficult at 75 years old easy put together foods can’t stand for long in kitchen these days with arthritis. If anyone can guide me to a low carb site with information I need and foods to suit a family it would be helpful, we usually do a lot of casseroles and homemade soups in winter hot sustainable foods and replace for myself carbs with extra veg since coming back to Diabetes.co.uk.K

Other options might be:
Greek yogurt with some berries/nuts/seeds. I sometimes make homemade keto olive and feta bread - yum!
Sometimes I buy low carb wraps and put cooked chicken and avocado in.
Sometimes I make pancakes with almond flour, egg, almond or soy milk and top with berries and Stevia or erithrytol sweetenet
Hi I’m going to try Greek yogurt and frozen fruit salad defrosted of course but how much Greek yogurt should there be in a portion size???K

I do 100g full fat Lidls Greek yoghurt and 80g frozen raspberries. 10 carbs the lot quick and perfectly adequate. If I don’t eat at all my levels just keep rising and I have to inject anyway. If I ate just an egg I’d still have to inject. I tried fasting at breakfast and ended up injecting double what I normally would. For some telling our body food is available stops sending it into panic mode. It’s hitting a balance.

I'm taking my glimepiride with lunch as first meal. It's a similar tablet.

I am T2 and have been since 2010.Yesterday I went for my diabetes review blood levels good and doing well then I was asked if I felt depressed and I broke down and finally admitted I felt serverly depressed and felt like taking all of my insulin at once and just go to sleep and all my problems would be over. She made me a gp appointment straight away and he put me on citalapram and refured me to diabetic specialist. This is all because I can't bare to stick that little needle in to me any more. He said that they might put me on a pump do T2s go on pumps?.

@maruam1851

How about looking into Ozempic? I think its now available in the UK from the NHS? If you have to pay out of pocket, (which I've done) its should be about 120 Quid / 4mg pen.. I started myself on Ozempic on the 10th of January 2022. I'm now down 14lbs. I've got 30lbs more to go but more than ever, I have hope for a brighter future so that I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to you.

I'm trying to vary my breakfasts, I rarely have a cooked breakfast but if I do it's something like scrambled eggs on brown bread with a sprinkle of sesame seeds...I ended up going to a specialist nutritionist here in Malta because I wasn't doing so well (I have a lot of allergies and intolerances) and he gave me interesting advice, like the sesame seeds thing, it feels weird but helps slow the digestion of the carbs so they don't all hit your blood glucose at once and also contain a lot of calcium, something my diet can lack if I'm not eating the greek yoghurt and berries or a cereal for breakfast. Funny how things work.

Also told me I was having too much protein, so for me keto is definitely not a good idea either.

Hope you find that balance.

Hi@the-mental-one So glad you found it works for you I too can’t take a lot of protein has 4 years ago it caused gout in my foot very painful, I try and limit protein to one main meal a day and rely on dairy like cheese omelette and salads on side or one slice of wholemeal toast and butter, yogurt and berries for breakfast and small amounts of carbs main meals I have meat chicken. etc with half plate of vegetables those grown above ground are less carbs than those grown under ground. If your BG is getting too low have a snack I always Carry a banana or whatever you prefer to push up my BG if I feel a bit shaky or light headed has that’s when I know my BG is low, for me that’s in the 4s.. I prefer to be in the 5s or 6 but like all diabetics it catches us all out and we haven’t a reason for it you just have to adjust your diet to it when needed, lots of things up our BG stress, angziety family life it all throws us off track.
None of us are saint’s we all fall off the wagon so to speak at times Diabetes catches us all off guard so don’t beat yourself up we all try our best and that’s all we can do. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DIABETES. And you can keep in touch with me that’s fine. What a name you’ve given yourself you are funny. K
It was Becca59 that gave me the Greek yogurt and berries breakfast so grateful to her, lots of people will help you on here just post your questions someone will pick up. K

Based on my readings before and after meals I'm managing my meals ok now, with never more than about a 1.5 rise in BG and I should probably just take the win, it's certainly better than the 10s and 11s post meals I was on when I first came back on the waggon :p but I'm aiming for "I don't have diabetes levels" as that was my jam back before I went into burnout.

Greek yoghurt and berries was one of the other suggested breakfasts from the nutritionist I went to, they really do make for a nice breakfast and in summer I can just blitz the berries into the yoghurt from frozen because frozen(ish) yoghurt when it's over 30 or 40°C is so good.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'm trying out rice cakes or ryvita with a bit of home made hummus or light cream cheese / sour yoghurt with chives and garlic dip (also home made) when I'm at home as light snacks, bananas are good for a quick pick me up too, or a little pot of mixed berries / grapes. I started eating a little snack in the morning if I'm feeling odd, I measured my BG when I was feeling weird around mid morning and discovered I was having dips down to 3 sometimes and then after having lunch I'd find I'd still be quite high before dinner (6s or 7s). So I'm now taking a metformin tablet at lunch with a possible snack needed mid afternoon too. I'll figure it out, it's most likely from the new metformin not being slow release.

I'm finding out other weird things this time round, maybe because I'm paying more attention to the other details, like my periods seem to effect my BG level; normally I'm at 5s before meals but I'm always at 6s before meals just before I start my period and often for the first few days I'm on. I know my PCOS is helped by the metformin, but I'm not exactly regular and I've been having noticeably much heavier periods since either Covid or my Covid booster (took the booster and then discovered I already had Covid when I came down with symptoms that were not standard booster side effects within 15 minutes of having the jab, because that's just what you want, Covid and booster side effects at the same time :inpain:) which may be part of the reason *shrug* I will go do some looking through the journals later, I'm sure people will have studied diabetes and menstruation in multiple ways.

oh, and the name, it was an old net handle from way back when, lots of people had nicknames about me being mental and eventually I just decided I wasn't worried about that, if anything I was proud that I wasn't like everyone else, so this geeky, autistic, goth, girl was going to take the moniker and make it her own :woot:;):cat:

@ the-mental-one Good on you by the sound of it your doing great diabetes is not the easiest condition to get control of so well done, I’m no different to some other people on here sometimes I fall off the Wagon has they call it when you slip with your BG readings.
We are all trying to keep control but it’s not easy mine has been up and down in 7s in a morning but from early spring through summer I’m on allergy medication steroid nasal spray and tablets so even if I’m very good with my diet lots of things throw BG of track, so check out BG and menstrual cycle it’s more than a possibility. Good Luck to you. K

I normally take asthma inhalers in the morning but I've noticed I don't have anywhere near the problems I used to have with it in northern Europe, the plants and weather that triggered attacks just aren't as common here, also it seems to be better when I'm on metformin so maybe I can try stopping the inhaler for a bit and see how it goes. Anything to make things more predictable because it really isn't right now. 9.1 after breakfast (up 2.8 from my fasting level despite eating something that normally only raises it by 2) then down to 4.1 before lunch...wasn't my best lunch took me up to 8.1 but it's all learning all over again will not eat that combination of things for a meal again.

I wouldn't mind all a bit high but the high then low then high is what worries me, consistent blood glucose is what I'd prefer to see.

Feel like I'm experiencing THE longest burnout ever but feel completely unsupported. My DSN is lovely and when I first reached out again she was very supportive and saw me weekly to help me get back on track but once things are on the up it's a phonecall every now and then which just doesn't work because I can't maintain my control for long periods before falling back into old habits.

Has anyone on this thread asked their DSN about GLP-1 Agonists? Like Ozempic yet? In the US Ozempic is all the rage and thousands of patients are losing weight and getting their lives back together.

Seems to be a shortage of this drug and only given to certain patients. Myself I wouldn't want it right now but that might change. The future is uncertain. Not sure how much it costs the nhs either. Shortage normally means it pushes the cost of it up.

Novo Nordisk the manufacturer of Ozempic is having issues delivering the drug.

I weighed myself this morning and I'm down 19 lbs in 5+ months. I can feel the improvement in my feet vis a vis neuropathy. I walk about 3 miles every day in the afternoon.

I know that in the UK drug companies are not allowed to advertise in the UK media, so patients get to hear about the new drugs well after they've been on the market for years. Ozempic in fact has been out since 2017 so I'm late in coming to the party.

There is yet a newer drug Mounjaro and supposedly that is even better than Ozempic with a better outcome but that's only been out a small amount of time since May of 2022
