I just wanted to know if it is possible for someone to be diabetic and not know?

I have some symptoms of type 2 diabetes but always been told that its not. recently I have lost over 11lbs in a month, im always thirsty and need the loo lots, especially in the night, i have problems with itching down below as well.

i dont know if i have any relatives with diabetes or not as most of them are dead. i dont know anything about any medical problems that my father's family might have had as i dont know where they are or even if they are still alive.

Hi Happypixi

I had exactely the same symptoms when I was diagnosed, lost 4 stone and the intense thirst was horrible and left "that taste" in my mouth. ergh. The itching could be due to high levels of bacteria...also known as thrush, its common when sugar is high.

I would book an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible and explain your concerns. I first went to the nurse as I didnt have a clue and she was great. Be good to know how you get on.

Hi happypixi :)
Many of us didn't know that we had diabetes before we were diagnosed so were surprised, but others had symptoms which made them go to be tested as they wondered if they were diabetic. With symptoms like that you should go to your doctor and ask for tests. It may not be diabetes - it could be something else which only your doctor can determine.

It's quite possible; I was diagnosed (in hospital with bad DKA) less than three months after seeing by GP because I had suspected diabetes; he told me I wasn't diabetic and not to worry after doing a random finger prick blood test...

Hi. I have no family history of diabetes so it came as a complete surprise when I was diagnosed. You symptoms do indicate the possibility of diabetes. I would certainly visit the GP and ensure he/she does at least a blood test. Many chemists now do an initial blood test fro free but your GP can do the full range as necessary

Good luck with your tests!!!
Metformin does have some side effects just like any other medication. Usually the side effects would go away in a few weeks as your body is getting used to it. There are some people who absolutely cannot tolerate it. I guess you cant say until you try it. I am sure the doctor will explain all options to you!!

I'm an American, but I could recommend some books that might be helpful starting out if you'd like. It's been really helpful to me and my family.

got rushed to hospital early hours of Friday morning with headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Also really thirsty and needing to pee lots. BG tested 5.7., second BG tested 6.7, third BG tested 6.9. Todays BG tested 7.8 that was around three hours after lunch. Hospital did hba1c which came back as 6.6. Got to see what the doctor says as the hospital would not give deffinite diagnosis of diabetes. All the medical doctor on call on friday would say is that it could be whats known as pre-diabetes and that my GP needs to keep a check on BG levels very closely.

Going to re check BG before my dinner tonight.

been to see GP again this morning, fasting BG 7.4. Have been testing BG for a week on a meter I borrowed, fasting BG anything from 5.7 to 7.4. After meals its been 9.4.

GP has put me on 500mg metformin once a day with my main meal. Been given an appointment with Diabetes specialist nurse to get diet advice. GP has given me a BG monitor.

Got to see GP again in two weeks.
