I see that the Open University is running its last presentation of the short course Diabetes Care in May 2012.

I thought, being newly diagnosed, that may be very interesting. Has anyone given the course a go?

Never seen it, but I'd be a bit wary being open university in case it's a bit "follow the government guidelines" in it's approach: you know, HbA1Cs of 7 are great, eat carbs with every meal and take your medicine, cut out fats etc. Might be unfounded, but that would be my concern.
My "open university" tends to be this forum. Probably more knowledge here than on open university.

If you want to have a look at a couple of the units before signing up, they are free to access in the open learning space
http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=2651

edit: someone has got things a bit mixed up on the OU site, the second unit is a cut down version of the first and another is in chinese so only one unit seems to be available at the moment :(
Several others about things like genes and CVD that some people might find interesting. Complete list:

Grazer: I first learned scientific sketicism with the 0U

Sterling,

Looking at the links Phoenix kindly provided it looks like a very worthwhile course to take, I particularly like the idea when it says it will look at the ''medical, social, psychological and educational aspects of the condition of diabetes.''

Should you enroll let us know how you get on! :)

I've taken this course and enjoyed it. I took it as part of a degree. I'm sure you're aware that you have to do assignments if you want to actually pass the course. The course book is good, as is the CD Rom that you get with it.

You can actually buy the course book and CD-Rom separately without having to take assignments or pay for the full course.

I thought it a very good course but then I did have an excellent course tutor. I found the course gave me a fuller understanding of diabetes which enabled me, until recently, to speak to the GP and HCP's with a better level of knowledge.

Having taken other OU courses, much does depend on the course tutor and how much knowledge they have and how much time they can be bothered to be in contact with their students.
Beware that the study time is realistically double what the OU say unless they have changed the course since I took it a few years ago.
That comment was made on the feedback page which should be accessible to you.

I had not studied for over 20 years but still coped and got an excellent grade at the end.

I have looked at this and it does indeed look interesting. Does anyone know how many hours the course is?

Official guide 150 hours over 26 weeks. About five to six hours a week.

Thanks Sterling for posting...I really like the look of the course. Reason why I asked how many hours is because I am pregnant with baby due end July/beg Aug. I will leave work beg May and really like the idea of getting into something 'educational' whilst I am sitting at home...the course looks fantastic, I am just wondering whether I can realistically do the 150 hours, I think pre- birth no problem but after...I dont know!

Will give it some thought but thanks again for posting.
