Thank you every one. Oh chocho, I do love red wine, but it really doesn't like me at all. I am always very ill next day, even with just half a glass. Bacardi, I have not had that in years. I used to really like it too. Perhaps after the gin, I will need to widen my experimentation fields

What a happy thread this has become. I think a forum party with alcohol consumed purely for medical research sounds a wonderful idea. Chin chin.

Football. Bad manners.
Just to add a bit to think about, this being my specialist subject too! I am a red wine drinker and pre-diagnosis used to drink too much, too often. Sometimes more than a bottle a night. I occasionally used to have night-time hypos - woke up sweating, heart pounding etc, and frightened to death 'cos I thought it might be a heart problem  . It wasn't until I came on here that I realised what had been happening to me.

I am reformed (a bit!) now, and drink smaller quantities less often. But I do notice that if I drink every night for a week my fasting BGs start to creep up again. This may be because alcohol makes me graze and lessens my willpower - too many Ryvitas before bed  - OR it could be because the wine takes me too low overnight and I have a small liver dump that shows in the morning. I've not had a night-time hypo since diagnosis, though.

There are two things to note in this - first para shows that anyone, even a non-diabetic, can have a hypo. I was definitely NOT diabetic when these started, though I was probably insulin resistant.

Second - even when BGs are nice and stable, too much alcohol on a regular basis affects willpower and the liver. My liver has been very good to me, and is still working fine; however, I wouldn't recommend anyone to have it as a transplant when I'm gone!

Plus a third thought - alcohol acts as an inflammatory in the body, and inflammation is involved with many problems, including pancreatic malfunction.

There is a saying that someone who drinks regularly, even one every evening, has the first foot on the road to alcoholism. I have never considered myself an alcoholic, because I have always been able to stop, even for months at a time. I'm very aware of it, though, because my father died of whisky and I'm definitely not going that way  One a day shouldn't hurt - as long as it's not one bottle

I'm not saying 'don't drink alcohol' (who, me? ). I'm saying 'be aware of the whole picture'. A little of what you fancy does you good  Just don't fancy too much of it. :D

Tsh tsh, get your feet off the bar Grazer

There is no better BG protecting beverage than gin in my opinion. Two G&T's will stop most things including a reasonable sized slice of sweet sticky chocolate birthday cake. If we're having a party why stop at two!

You have just become my new best friend. All over to Grazer's pad, but make sure he wiped the footmarks from the bar first

At least I kept my feet off the bar stools. Don't want the ladies getting dirty skirts when they sit down.

Today's experiment has not quite gone according to plan. I had a new food item for dinner today, and my BG after half an hour was 9.4. I have never had such a high reading, so sainsbury's pork and Bramley apple sausages are now a no go. I also had some mixed peppers which I fried in a little butter, and some mushrooms fried in a little butter and garlic. Just tested again an hour after dinner, down to 6.4 :***: was my reaction to that! I will test again in around 25 minutes, and see what the 90 minute reading is, then the two hour mark. Had the G&T after dinner.

Sounds like sugar got in there somehow if it spiked you that quickly, I'd suspect sugar added to sweeten the Bramley apple in the sausage?

Yes, you're right, there was 13g of sugar in the sausages  I was checking the carbs (15g) and not the sugar. Another lesson learned.

With my moderator hat on:

Although alcohol is going to help control blood glucose as your liver is going to stop releasing background glucose whilst it deals with the alcohol this is only going to be for a couple of hours at best and then it will business as usual... unless you plan on having a drink every 3 - 4 hours then I don't see this as a means to control... well not unless you want to replace diabetes with liver failure :)

Now... this party... why is it the most important person has yet to receive an invite?! :eh:

The person you have called is not available, she has gone to a party at Grazers. Please leave a message after the beep - Beeeeep!

Sorry Monsieur Mod, just teasing. Thank you for the advice. I am quite literally trying this out. If it works it works, if not it was a pleasurable experience.

Didn't spot anyone being invited - as usual with my place, people just seem to invite themselves! The more the merrier!
By the way, your comment on alcohol "wearing off" after a few hours. Doesn't seem to work like that. I think that by the time the alcohol stops affecting the liver, the carbs have either been digested or otherwise dealt with by the body, and my BGs NEVER take a hit. I've tested at many stages after, even next morning, still always lower. Perhaps the liver DOES process the carbs, but more slowly if it's dealing with the alcohol at the same time. The sugar rises are therefore far slower and dealt with more easily by our decining Pancreii (is that a correct plural?) I kept a graph of it all, and it amazed me.
Still agree, as I said earlier, that it's no good swapping diabetes for Cirrhosis! And I think you need more than a sniff of the bottle for it to work.
Now, back to this party, who's doing the low-carb sausage rolls? No bramley apple ones though Defren!
