Cramp - anyone else get it?

I do get it often. Are your sugars high when you get it? I suspect that it's down to an electroltytic imbalance caused by dehydration brought on in turn by hyperglycaemia. I have noted that my bouts of cramp vanish when I get the BG back to acceptable limits!

Dear Jeannemum,

No Quinine is not an anti-malerial drug but used as a paliative after infection and sometimes used ongoing which I feel can be dangerous especially as here in parts of Indonesia Malaria and Diabetes go hand in hand.

Thanks BR :)

Good point but my BG's are always in the threes and fours.

I was pondering this today when I was rudely awakened with my foot at an 'interesting' angle again. I used to suffer long and painful bouts of plantar fasciitis pre diagnosis but now vanished. I'd rather have the cramp.

Cramp is not well understood. i get it not only in the legs, but in odd places like my ribs and neck. A cardiologist friend told me to take some Sea salt up to bed with me and takea few crystals. My Veterinary surgeon/ Olympian [Mexico 1968 GB team] brother says that's rubbish!. Take your pick. I find salt gets it out of the muscles without hurting them. Stretching hurts them.

I am fine Smidge. It is really well controlled. I do come down the stairs like a toddler in the mornings, but other than that I am in the pink, and the low carbing has helped immeasurably :D

I have AJ arthritis and I creak like an old barn door that needs oil until I get the old joints moving and warm. 'Tis all fun and games isn't it?

Your Cardiologist friend might have a point Hana. I don't add salt to anything at all. I buy it for the rest of the family etc, but it's put on at the table, I don't allow salt in my kitchen.

Hi xyzzy
Well I had very bad cramp during the night, sometimes in both legs at the same time. I am not on a low carb diet. A colleague at work has the same problem, also not a low carb diet. What I took after suggestions from the forums is a Magnesiumn supplement. Since taking this I have very rarely had any pains in my calf mussels.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that. I have recently ordered a Magnesium supplement so great minds think alike!

All the best and take care.

Magnesium is also recommended for controlling blood pressure. I take 150mg of magnesium citrate 3 times daily, and was taken off BP meds at New Year. Mind you, I was only on 5mg Lisinopril - it's never been frighteningly high.

Also, as far as I understand it, you can't OD on magnesium - you just excrete the excess. Rather rapidly! It's never happened to me  .

I sometimes get very strange twisty cramps down the outsides of my feet and legs - must remember to note if they coincide with forgetting the magnesium.

Yes Magnesium Sulphate is what Epsom Salts are. Think they make you go don't they?

Epsom Salts? Probably yes - but Andrews is my favourite form of blasting powder  .

Magnesium supplements should be 'citrate' because apparently it's the form that's best absorbed.

Dear All,

This message is meant for those that stand by Quinine Sulphate as the solution to leg cramps.

Members here may remember that I used QS for 6-8 years continuously to prevent the worst
possible leg cramps and that, not once, did I have a cramp from the moment I took the first
tablet.

Yesterday, after some 10 days of specialised drug testing, my specialist has concluded that my
kidney damage was caused by this medication. This agrees with the research in the US which
proved conclusively that 90 people died from the long-term use of the drug.

I wish I had known of the potency of Quinine Sulphate and had had the opportunity to try other
remedial treatments.

Morning everyone,

I was diagnosed as type twobie on 4 May by the receptionist at the GP surgery who booked me an appointment at the diabetic clinic at my own surgery . She said it is is a long appointment and finally nearly three weeks later -the earliest appointment - Monday The big day dawns. Could anyone be an angel and tell me what I should expect on Monday ? Many thanks x

BaliRob...the doctor who prescribed it for that purpose and for such a long duration should be struck off. Its side effects have been known for 30 or more years. I'm sorry to hear about your kidney trouble, but at least now you can move forward with treatment.
Blondage...I think ou have put your question in the wrong spot and no-one will see it under this topic. Maybe re-post as a new thread
cheers

Dear Paul,

Thankyou for your support - interesting isn't it? - a young irritable English doctor prescribed the Quinine but a very personable, caring and approachable Indonesian doctor suggested that I stop taking it.

Regards,

Rob
