Give me an idea of what you eat on a daily basis to see if I can pinpoint something that is upsetting your stomach.

When I am stressed, I get pains under my ribs on the left. Wheat really upsets my stomach.

Hi Megan

Can you give us more details? Already I'm thinking I couldn't eat those things without a) Blood sugar going up and b) Trumping like a good 'un. (ie tummy)

I note you are type 1 with insulin, what's your control like?

The reason I ask that is when I was diagnosed with Type 2 I thought I had no symptoms, however, after about 6 weeks of low carbing (getting my BG under control) I noticed that my hands were no longer hurting/aching/slow to get going in the morning. I had thought I was starting with arthritis at only 43 but now I know it was the high BG's or my body not liking carbs.

Do you eat what you want and adjust your insulin to suit?

And the reason I ask this is - type 1's can adapt their insulin to cover the carbs they eat, I don't have that option so choose to greatly reduce the carbs I eat, mainly to bring my BG down but the (pleasant) side effect I got was less grumbling tummy, fartiness, plus a 2.5 stone weight loss to boot.

Some people I know diabetic or not, find too much bread (carb) too much pots (carbs) cause IBS type problems etc . Is it a possiblity with your HCP help you could look to reducing your carbs to see if you find your body improves at all. The reason I say with HCP help is cos of the impact of the insulin - hypo territory may come into it. As I say I'm type 2 so not that knowledgeable re T1 just what I've picked up from here.

I was on the CHOICE ( DAFNE ) programme to adjust insulin per carb intake my blood sugars have gone down and HbA1c was 7.2 however as my diet was back for all my life I would not know what carbs to cut out - if l could I would go liquid food as stomach so so sore and passing even worse. I have had so many tests but no solutions. What has wheat and what has carbs?

Instead of cutting out carbs like a Type 2, you could try different carbs such as oat based cereal (you have to watch the labels - Oat Krunchies are a no because they have wheat bran in them) - oatibix or an oat based museli would be good.

Change your bread for a gluten free one - warburtons gluten free tastes the best.

Make sure you drink lots of water as this will help the passage of the food.

The more stressed you are, the more your stomach will hurt as stress makes your stomach produce more acid and this makes it hurt. So try to calm down and relax a bit.

Of course it may not be wheat you are having problems with, it may be the lactose in milk, so if none of the above helps, try lactose free milk.

I tested negative twice for coeliacs, but I still can't eat wheat.

Hope you feel better soon.

I wouldn't go for specialist gluten free food as it is expensive.

For breakfast I would try Oatibix http://www.weetabix.co.uk/products/cereals/oatibix or Oatibix Flakes http://www.weetabix.co.uk/products/cere ... bix-flakes - had a look at Oatibix bites and they have wheat in them. The advantage of the Oatibix is that you could make them into a soft mush and hopefully this would be quite soothing on your stomach.

Lunch could be a salad and some fruit. Evening meal could be meat and veg. Make sure you drink plenty of water.

If you are looking for a snack, then Nairns do oatcakes that don't have wheat in them http://www.nairns-oatcakes.com/our-oaty-food/oatcakes

As you are on insulin, I wouldn't worry too much about the carb content of what you are eating as you can use the correct amount of insulin for the amount of carbs you are eating.

Although I have the opposite problem to you when eating wheat, give cutting out wheat a go and see if it helps. I saw a gastroenterologist and had a barium follow-through and was put on mebeverine for bloating. It wasn't suggested to me to cut out wheat, but when I did most of my symptoms went away.

It is quite possible to cut wheat out of your diet, although a little challenging for eating out. It doesn't have to be expensive.

I am so sorry to hear how you have suffered. It's interesting that wheat should come up as an issue as I believe this is in fact a much bigger problem than is common knowledge. Perhaps something has happened to certain types of wheat, either through genetic modification or intense breeding, but there seems to be an awful lot of people who, although not diagnosed as coeliacs, have developed a low-level immune response to it.

I can get away with very small amounts, I generally eat porridge for breakfast, a carefully measured 25 gram portion to keep the carb intake down, and add apple sultanas and sometimes other fruit, made with water and a little cinnamon stirred in, then topped with three spoons of natural, low-fat yoghurt - beautiful and good for you too.

Of course that takes 15 or 20 minutes to prepare and cook, a couple of weeks ago I had to have some early starts so skipped the porridge in favour of sugar free museli. Uh-Oh, by the end of the week I was a wreck, stomach bloated and solid, headaches almost continually, aching limbs and swollen joints - typical immune reaction.

I've avoided it as much as possible since and am almost back to normal now 2 weeks later.

I have cheese, salad, tuna and/or pate on rye crispbreads for lunch, sometimes with soup (but watch out, these often use wheat flour for thickening - why can't they use cornflour?) If you've never tried the Finn Crisp, rye crispbreads I would strongly recommend them - take care with Ryvita as some of the more exotic varieties include wheat.

Of course some diabetics, and all T1s, have an extra sensitive immune system so it is not uncommon for many to have reactions to other things like wheat, gluten, dairy etc. Your symptoms sound very typical of such a reaction, and unless the doctors can test for specific, and often very low levels of, antibodies they won't be able to diagnose anything other than sensitivity or IBS.

I hope you have some success with adjusting your diet and get on the road to feeling good again soon - let us know how it goes and good luck.

Hi, i had alot of problems with my stomach the last few years. bloated, but having diarhoea about 5 times every day. My back was in pain all the time and i felt like a right lazy slob cos i never felt like doing anything. I was tired all the time, sore especially in my joints, it was really horrible. I went to the doctor and she gave me immodium for the 'runs' and i have just started an anti-depressant called fluoxetine(prozac). I get a steroid injection when my joints flare up. The doctor diagnosed enflamed tendons. I feel a million times better now. My doctor also recommended cutting out certain foods ie wheat, dairy etc....and i have found that wheat sets my stomach off badly with terrible bloating, pain and wind!!
I hope this might help.

Hi cherri I am so glad you finally got your medical problems sorted out. I go for a Coeliac Disease blood test tomorrow, unsure if this is the problem with my stomach, but if it's ruled out ,then more investigations can take place. I just want to find the problem and get it treated if possible :)
