Hi Lianne,

Have a look in the topic "Sticky: General links for diabetes" in this section. There are several diebetes specialist insurers listed.

Try Columbus http://www.columbusdirect.com/index.cfm?sourcecode=wkwldwho specialise in insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions. They cover my husband and myself for Worldwide annual insurance (i.e. any number of holidays per annum) for £96 for both of us which includes all my diabetic stuff and two other conditions. You can get an add-on for Winter sports so I dare say you can get cover for scuba diving.

Hi Lianne1985

Don’t know how long you have been diving for and what level you are at

But there are issues with diving safety and diabetes

<font color="purple">Divers with diabetes are at risk of sudden loss of consciousness. This carries the ultimate risk of drowning and implies additional risks for their dive buddies. Individuals with diabetes, however well the diabetes is controlled, should not be deemed as fit to dive without restriction. Those who meet certain criteria can dive provided they dive in accordance with detailed, specific procedures</font id="purple">

Also most standard travel insurance will not cover a diabetic diver
You may have to get specific dive insurance to cover you .

see UK SPORT Diving Medical Guidelines

http://www.bsac.org/page/181/diabetes-mellitus.htm

Also see DAN if diving out side the UK as most will follow what
DAN has to say
http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/faq/faq.asp?faqid=126

DAN diver Insurance is not too bad

I am also a diver and advanced diving instructor for 25 years
Also a very new diabetic and know I will NOT be getting in the water,
Until I have this under very good control, even then my diving will be limited from the deep tec diving that I have been enjoying over the years

Bob
Sorry for the bad news

I’m OK

I would second the advice from Patti - Columbus is good.

I got ANNUAL cover for less than you've been quoted: worldwide cover, including water sports and winter sports...

I presume you've made sure that the company you'll be diving with are happy to take you as a Type 1? Several people have mentioned to me that companies may be unwilling to take you out if you have Type 1, presumably through fear you will hypo while under the water.

Just check it out before you go (maybe you already have) - would hate for you to be disappointed!
