Got diagnosed a few weeks ago and am doing my damndest to beat the thing (exercise, lose weight etc etc....). Part of this is monitoring by glucose levels and am noting an odd thing : my glucose levels rise overnight. I am on metformin with my meals (at the mo twice a day - 500mg) .

For example: a couple of days ago a late evening glucose level was 4.7; next morning it was 5.7 with NO metformin or food in between.

This is where is I am puzzled.

I am a (irony!) biochemistry graduate and I dug out my (up-to-date) text book and it had the classic graph in it of the glucose levels either stabilising or decreasing overnight.....

Anybody know what is happening? Happy to talk as detailed as needs be!

Basically it's due to overproduction of glucose by the liver overnight.
The simple answer

but if you want the more complex one it's explained in quite a bit of detail here:
http://bja.oxfordjournals.org/content/85/1/69.full.pdf
according to the article there are a lot of trainee anaesthetists who got the question ' Is the fasting hyperglycaemia of diabetes due to the overproduction of glucose by the liver or the underutilization of glucose by peripheral tissues ' wrong.

Just noticed your edit :D

I am just out of date now ... although I am a biochem graduate I haven't been active for many many years .... brain rot set in! I do have a modern biochem book but mainly for reference!
