hi anna,

i just wanted to say if you want to get a tattoo you should. i am type 1 and have 4. one on the base of my back, one on the back of my neck, one on my tummy and my latest one on my wrist. i designed this one myself and it says diabetic with the t in red and 1 also in red under the t. i copied the diabetes logo of the red bird as this is pretty and has a diabetic link and it looks great. i have to say my other tattoos are black and i never had a problem with them but the red bird on my latest tattoo got slightly infected. i kept it clean, dry and used lots of savlon and its now fine. you just need to take extra care but i would say go for it!!

Lezzles, I noticed my tattoos done in red ink now get a bit infected if I don't have good control over by blood sugar, whereas the reds I already have a re perfect when i wasn't diabetic! I think you should consider a tattoo of a box with"Take blood here" pointing to it, like I was going to get over my vein in my arm, but got a cherry blossom tattooed in the place before we remembered we was going to do it!skonk

i would get that but it's impossible to get blood out of my veins. i must be really grippy with it or something  the docs had to butcher me the last time, wasnt fun!

Funny you should say that, Lezzles, but today I had to get my bloods done and they couldn't get a drop out of my vein! It was bouncing around, all pumped, but nothing! Nurse was stumped! Took it out my other arm no problem though. The nurse was more interested in my tattoos than taking blood! A great ice breaker and talking point, I always find!

I currently ( I say that, as I plan for more), have 4 tatts. Have had no problems, admittidely the first one got was prediagnosis.

As long as its a respectable artist there shouldnt really be a problem, in my opinion of course

I think everyone is agreed that finding a reputable tattooist the main priority when getting a tattoo done. The most important thing is the aftercare. Many people have found different forms of aftercare work for them, and that is perfectly ok. My only previous rant about savlon is because, being a diabetic, I know bepanthum is much better solution for your tattoo. The longer the scab, the more chance of infection. Plus, bepanthum will keep it moisturised for longer, where as if you are continuously putting another kind of moisturiser on your tattoo, you;re not giving it a chance to breathe and for new skin to start growing.

Please don't think I am being mean towards those who use savlon. I am just speaking from experience and have known my tattooist as a friend for over twenty years, and we have seen all kinds of methods fo aftercare, and found bepanthum is the best.

Me too i am not a fan of tattoo. And I do suggest that you have to ask opinions on the doctors, specialists about your condition if they will allow you to have a tattoo in your body. You have to consider many things before doing it , :D .
