I need help not sure if I am suggesting with neuropathy or something else it all started 12 months ago I was healthy I mean ok I didn't control my diabetes as well as I had of but my fasting sugars were always in normal ranges Iv only been diabetic for 4 years I'm 22 now I was going the gym 4 days a week and I was doing protein training I was monitoring my sugars and they seemed normal at the time so I carried on for a few months at the gym until in December last year I got a strange pain in my thigh which felt almost like the muscle had gone to sleep then the symptoms just went crazy it spread to my back my hips both my knees I can remeber literally wanting to cry I was in that much pain as these symptoms came on so fast only in a matter of a week or two the doctor thought it was my lower back and ordered a MRI which showed nothing so I then went for a emg test which was clear and had numerous creative and other type blood tests which show nothing I also went as far as having a cytonscopthy as the pains in my bladder were becoming extreme so anyways after all these tests were negative my doctors are at a loose end I have intense burning in both knees shooting pains in my shins and stabbing in both my hips I also have constant burning whilst urinating and recently started having full body painful muscle cramps which feel like someone is chocking me :/ also I have intense painful eyes in the morning the weird thing is I don't have any numbness or tingling just intense pains I'm at a end with it all I can't enjoy myself I try to exercise but my muscles in. My legs seem to just become too painful to continue they feel really heavy and tight I also can't stand for long periods of time as I get tightness in my buttocks and both calves coupled with lower back burning my life is hell I don't know what it is I'm going for another emg to see if it is PN and it has been a year since my last one I haven't been tested for MS or other immune diseases just arthritis which was negative I hope someone can help me or give me some advice I live in the uk where healthcare is cheap but I am on Bupa insurance so i can go private

Hiya, what medication are you on beside insulin. Or in fact what insulin are you on?

Hi,
I'm sorry that you have these symptoms. It must be very worrying.
You never know though there may be someone with similar experiences so I'm answering to keep your post from getting lost.
It does sound though as if your GP is investigating and I think it would be very difficult for anyone here to attempt to diagnose when you are having the relevant tests. When are you going to have the EMG?

Note this is not medical advice just what I feel like, it sounds like you are already on the investigtion trail. Is it worth trying to get to see a specialist in neuropathy to see if any of it is related to your diabetes. I am no Doctor but a majority of those symptoms ring bells for me to do with neuropathy. Leg Cramps, burning pains in hips and bladder problems. We all have a bit different pains in strength with neuropathy, mine burn on the hip and thigh, ache on my toes and stab on my hips and I am prone to cramps and muscle spasms in my lower leg and feet , I look back over the last couple of years (mostly undiagnosed) and realise a lot of the stabbing pains and cramps in my legs feet and hips were to do with Blood Sugars and it takes very low sugar readings to take those pains away, in fact if I go over 8 at any time I can get them back that day or the next and that would be classed as normal readings in the GPs world. Maybe you need to see an expert rather than a GP to find out. Please do not believe it takes years to develop neuropathy pains I have them (but not as seriously as you and only sometimes, some people are seriously debilitated by pain) after what can only be 2 years of being actually diabetic (type 2). Neuropathy pain does not take years and years to develop despite what some GPs say. I know that bladder problems can be associated with diabetes so someone (a specialist) who knows about neuropathy should be able to tell you more about that too. I think I would try that as you have gone through the other tests, I found GPs will try anything first before they think of the obvious as they do not believe it can happen quickly, they assume it takes years and years to develop. My pains were put down to back problems, and low salt intake, it wasn't, they go away if my readings are below 8!

Have they checked your B12 levels? B12 deficiency can lead to neuropathy which isn't peripheral, and severe burning sensations. along with many of the other symptoms that you mention. Diabetes can intensify these but isn't always necessarily the root cause.

Hi :) i have had a b12 blood test which didnt show anything iv also had my thyroid checked i also take b12 supplements so i dont think i could be low on those i also take b1 supplement and magnesium but i still have all these strange symptoms to me it feels like its actually in the bones as opposed to nerves but im just at a complete loss with it i dont want to end up in a wheelchair before im 30 :( my sugars are always between 4- 9 and occasionally i have the odd high but nothing that would be a cause for concern like having a whole week of highs the bladder pains which i experience all started around the same time as the other pains but my emg was completely clean when i first went for it so i really dont know :(

also im 5ft 10 and i weigh 12 stone i have a athletic build and used to be very active but the past few months iv been very depressed constantly having tests done is there any kind of autoimmune diseases or joint diseases apart from arthritis which i have been tested for because i cant believe that my diabetes could cause this much pain at its worst it literally feels like a severe burning tight gnawing in both my hips and knees and its so unbearable at times i just want to crawl in a hole and die :( why should this happen to someone so young also the fact that i was going the gym when the pains started dosent make sense as exercise improves blood sugar control

Hi there  I'm so sorry to read of your troubles, they sound horrendous. Have you ever thought of any alternative treatments or medication. Maybe by stopping alot of the things you normally do, then you could write down ,in a diary, if there are any different symptoms or changes etc. What about relaxation techniques eg Yoga or a change of diet possibly?

I wish I could be more helpful. Take care with best wishes RRB

hi :) i tried a little hydrotherapy but believe it or not my knees were absolutely killing me in the water so i didnt continue it iv tried cutting carbs out of my diet but the pains just seem to stay the same im also not taking any form of medication for the pains just the vitamin supplements because i want to get to the root of the pains first before i take meds because i feel medication just masks the problem iv got a doctors app in about a hour but im not getting my hopes up to what he will want to do about my pains and i have had most tests im just banking on the EMG showing something but if i dosent i dont know what to think because if i really have this much nerve damage surly it would show up on a test i thought neuroapthy only effected people with long term diabetes and a poor history of blood control this is what i keep battling with in my mind nothing adds up as iv only had it for 4 years :( :( :(

Are you allergic to anything in your diet? It might sound extreme but what about a fast - as in a green fast, avocado and cucumber wizzed up in a liquidizer. Plenty of info out there for that. It just appears that despite all the tests you are hitting a blank wall. Hope the next tests you are due can shed some light on it.
Good luck.

I could try that :) i have hit a blank wall its depressing :( :( yeah i hope they will shed some light on it as im suffering bad is it possible to have problems which arent even related to diabetes but have the same kind of neurological problems my muscles get really painful and i feel maybe i did some damage using the protein shakes in the gym like maybe i set off a metabolic disease or some other kind of muscle problem :(

Hi, it sounds to me like you need to get referred to a Pain Clinic. You could have Fibromyalgia or some such allied illness.
This is not medically based but my own experience. Tell your Diabetes consultant everything, TRUTHFULLY, especially your blood testing results, they cannot help without the full picture. Good luck in finding an answer.

Little update went to see my diabetic consultant and he seemed to think it may be something else causing all the problems as he said my last emg was clean and that I have full circulation and feeling in feet he has arranged blood tests to look into all sorts of different problems I meet with the neurologist tomorrow and will push for a emg test again and a nerve biopsy just to rule anything out this is all abit strange as It so feels like it should be my diabites causing the problems but I guess there's more going on than meets the eye will keep you all posted thanks

Hi
Been reading this on and off and thanks for the update, good news at least.

B12 has been mentioned and yours is ok. But the range of what gp calls normall is quiet large, and some are better at a higher range, just a thought.

re the sensations/etc/etc, don't think anyone has mentioned this, but anxiety makes things worse and I don't need to tell you that.

My close friend had every symptom under the sun and tests, and going through a messy sepration, it turned out to be depression, not saying yours is, but worth checking.

I too have had a full life re medicals, losing parents, family, etc etc and pains, exhaustion all over the place and a few over the counter remedies helped me.

not saying you are like that best to look at every option.

Good luck!
