Over Carbed

Hmmmm went to see the lights at Blackpool last night with the 4 Lads and wife, We decided to have our tea out. And I had promissed myself fish and chips from way back, I said if I hit all my targets I would splurge for a day. So we find a nice returant and I duely ordered my fish and chips, it came looking resplendant in it's crispy golden batter and fresh cooked chips with a lovely portion of mushy peas just the way I used to love it. I got through about half my fish and a few chips and it just never tasted the same as I remember. I felt bloated and sickly and eventually offered what was left to the hungry vultures perched on my shoulder watching, after they had eaten all theirs. When we left I felt giddy as if drunk. Futher on in the evening I had two pints of larger while watching the fireworks display and a single bite of a doughnut, followed by 1" of rock, it was the seaside it would be wrong not too I thought. On my way home, I had terrible cramping pains in my lower stomach, still persisting into today, May be a touch of a Carb to far? After months now on restricting my carb intake and no real sugar to speak of, I am wondering if my body now see's it as poison or something.

Blackpool is where I was born and lived until I left home and came South!! Ahhh - the lights .... your post made me full of nostalgia. But down to the serious stuff of Type 2 ... how was your fasting blood this morning, or did you not take it incase your meter had a fireworks display of its own!!!!!

I'm gob smacked!!! But yes, as you say, when you have radically changed the way in which you eat and then return to the past a little bit, it is amazing how horrible you can feel. I reckon your painful stomach is probably due to that carb cocktail ! - the bloating definitely.
Impressed with your 5.2 though - sounds like you are very on top of the situation.

Yes I guess your palete changes and you no longer crave the sweet stuff, it was just a case of how can I go to Blackpool lights and not do some of the things I used to love, has anybody ever tried getting low carb food at the mecca of Rock, doughnuts and Fun. We did enjoy it though and the fireworks where fantastic, second time we have been this year, Next time I will hit the seafood, I think some cockles and prawns with nice salad, but the doughnuts and rock that will always be my downfall, I just cannot resist the smell of fresh cooked doughnuts Ohhhhhhh Doughnuts!!! as Homer would say   The pain is like a cramp in the lower part of my stomach, I would liken it to wind, only without the wind bit, if you know what I mean  strange though.

I would say your body is now responding NORMALLY to carbs, especially when you mentioned the feeling drunk bit. Maybe they ARE a poison to the likes of you and I and maybe when we ate a carb diet before we just overrode those signs and symptoms and just kept on eating.

One of my stock phrases when trying to describe how I've been feeling for the past 20 years is "I feel drunk most of the time, yet I don't even drink alcohol." I also used to get very pronounced, weird tingling, burning sensations in my lips and tongue after certain meals and I'd feel even hungrier than before I ate. I also heard many years ago that with diabetics the sugar turns to alcohol in the blood which is why we can sometimes be mistaken for having had one too many when all we've had is a sticky bun! :x Dunno whether that's true or not but it certainly feels like it at times.

Since being on LCHF diet for the past 8 weeks, I now know those symptoms are down to eating carbs. I don't feel drunk after meals any more and if I do get the tingly tongue and mouth it's after I've eaten crackers or a piece of chocolate but never after protein and fats. I do have the occasional 'fish and chips' from the chippy but I eat about 2 inchs of tail end of the fish and a handful of chips and I've had enough to satisfy my chippy urge and my chippy friend eats the rest. Now if I was in Blackpool it might be a whole different ball game - I'd probably scoff the lot.

The longer I've been on the LCHF and not getting those symptoms, the more noticable they are when I eat carbs so yes, it's amazing how quickly our body gets used to our new diet and feels yuk when it returns to the old. Doesn't stop me missing things though.

Hmmm. I have been thinking about Christmas. Should I have a day being 'normal' or stay on with my ULC lifestyle? The thing that puts me off being normal, is exactly what you have described and the fact I would have to go through Atkins flu again. I have wondered if it is worth it. I think your post has just made up my mind. I will carry on the same on Christmas day as I do any other. I plan to do the Newcastle diet (just shakes) all through January, so will be doing that for my birthday, so why put myself through a load of grief for one days feeding frenzy. Thanks Roy (I genuinely mean that).

Christmas Day has been just another day to me for the past 20 years or so. I don't do or eat anything different than I do the rest of the time, because I don't like all the 'Christmas food' and never have. I eat what I like, not what the shops want me to buy or what tradition demands I should buy. I used to buy mince pies every Christmas and I got acid reflux every time I ate them. Did I stop buying them? No. But that was when I was thick as two short planks and got caught up in the hype. And then one year I just stopped. And that was it. I've enjoyed my Christmases ever since.

It's Christmas the time of goodwill to all and over indulgence in all thats bad for you, and I have 4 Lads 17, 15, 13, 7 you try telling them they ain't gettin, selection boxes, Roses, Quality Street and mince pies, It would be a braver man than me! I think I will have my usual fare for the day, only roasties done in goose fat this year and smaller portion, leave out the Christmas pud and instead have mixed berries with brandy and cream, followed by an nice single malt whisky. Beef on boxing day with Savoy cabbage, philli cheese, pancetta and mushrooms. with low carb raspberry mousse topped off with strawberries and cream. Me sorted then munu for New Year?
Normally Lamb on the day.

I'll be making my low carb mince pies and having them with clotted cream. Can't resist. Have a new low carb flour mix now, so should be even better than last year.

Off to Roy's for Xmas!! :D

I have over carbed recently - before I found this forum - and made myself very ill. It's odd because I went on hols recently totally over indulged and got no symptoms whatsoever. Had 2 wobbly days at home and felt I was going to die! Not sure how it occurred.

Being very careful now until the Xmas do at Roy's that is ;)

WE often get away with things on hols that we don't at home. Can be extra phsyical effort (swimming, walking sightseeing, etc) or alcohol (we tend to drink more on hols), both of which lower blood sugars and counter the carbs.

I don't understand how alcohol can lower the blood sugar - can you explain that please? Whenever I drink even a small amount of alcohol I feel absolutely awful soon afterwards, the effect seems to multiply x 20.

You probably feel awful BECAUSE it's lowering your blood sugar and at the moment your body has become acclimatized to running at high sugar levels - or perhaps alcohol just doesn't agree with you for other reasons. It is a fact. The liver processes things in order of importance. It sees alcohol as a toxin, and won't process carbs into sugar until the toxins are cleared. By then, the carbs are digested and gone and never end up as glucose in the blood most of the time. There is a name for this that an endocrinologist who specialises in diabetes told me about, but can't remember it. It is because alcohol reduces blood sugar levels that insulin users such as type 1s have to be careful of hypos when drinking, and will often have something carby like a slice of pizza after to keep their BGs up. Spirits have the most profound effect because they also have zero carbs, and wine is next in effect. Even beer, with loads of carbs, seldom pushes BGs up, and often still lowers it, although some report higher BGs later - I never get even that.

Thanks Grazer, I get it now - I had mainly wine and whisky on hols so the formula must have worked for me that's why I got away with the cakes :D

And to improve things I have now got a bike - so hopefully that balances things at home too - although with the weather the impact may be limited!
