I'm 17weeks preg and there has been a few complications and to top it off I'm now been told I'm T2, I was told it was gestational 2 weeks ago but as I've always been borderline they now say I am T2 as they believe I got it before I got preg. I'm really struggling to keep my sugar level below 10 @ 1 hr after eating they have upped my metformin to 1000mg twice a day and said I will b on insulin in a month or so. I'm also being sent to London to a specialist for a scan on my unborn baby's heart as they struggled to find a heart beat.

Has anyone else had to have this done?

Sorry I did post this in the gestational diabetes but I should have posted it here

Thanks x

Hi Jo,

Sorry to hear you have all this going on it must be very worrying. I've not been through this myself so cannot advise but I can recommend that you reduce your carbohydrate intake to try an control your levels. If you can cut back on rice, pasta, potatoes and bread and then switch to brown versions it might help. Try to replace the carbs with more meat and veggies that grow above the ground.

Good luck and keep us up to date with what is going on. Take care, Jane

I just read another of your posts and can see that you are trying to low carb already. Maybe if you can tell us what you are eating we can see where tweaks can be made.

However I understand that the Maternity Diabetes care is very good, if they think you need insulin then that might be the best option for you and the baby. As I said before, good luck and take care of yourself. Jane x

Do you get high readings after the cornflakes? It might be better to have yoghurt and berries for brekkie, or bacon. Cornflakes have very very little nutritional value. Maybe add a mixed salad or some veggies to your lunch. You can tell your DB nurse you are getting your carbs from veggies.

Non-insulin injectable medication (incretin mimetics)
It does make you wonder if the 'DN' has ever tested a diabetic after a good dose of carbs.

I have an allergy to milk so I can't have yogurt. The cheese I have is a soya cheese. If I eat banana my blood is sky high. I used to have fruit and fibre but that makes it high se as with porridge.

I do like a tortilla wrap with chicken and salad in sometimes for lunch

Hey! I was diagnosed gestational and now I'm type 2. First of all, I know it's easier said than done, but don't panic! I know the nurse has told you to eat more carbs and that peon contradicts everything here on this site for type 2 but you gotta remember things are treated differently because you are pregnant and the baby still needs certain things. For example i was in a diet of 30-40g carbs per meal and I was out on insulin at 28 weeks and it was hard work to be so strict and getting the level right as you need to be regularly monitored as your tolerance levels change the further you go along!! You should get regular growth scans and consultant appointments. Hope this gas helped a little x

Have they given you any kind of dietary advice? Like swapping to whole versions if things? Like granary bread, brown rice Etc? insulin really isn't that bad for a short term thing, you will prob be put back on metformin as soon as baby is born, once the placenta has been delivered you start to go back to how you were before pretty much straightaway! I was in two different insulin a, a rapid one for mealtimes and one for nighttime. Just a word of advice though, educate everyone around you invade you have a hypo! I asked my mum what she'd do if I had a hypo and she said try and give me insulin which of course would have prob finished me off! Lol

Honestly, please don't panic. I'm not going to lie, it's hard work and its something you prob wish you didn't have but you have a lot of control with this xxx

Hi Jo125

I was also diagnosed in pregnancy (28 weeks) but was put on insulin within 24 hours. Was very scarey at the time but soon got the hang of it and as I could see my BS stablising I started to feel I was making progress and protecting my baby at the same time. I was likely already T2 before hand and four years on and back on insulin after two years of trying diet and metformin. I was fairly sucessful for a while keeping carbs low and only having wholemeal bread and pasta but never got the hang of replacing carb calories with protien ones and so lost too much weight. I did feel abit of a failure when back on insulin but it's working better now and I mostly feel really well and a good weight (still low ish carbs).

I never had to have my babies heart monitored, I really hope that goes well for you.

I just got through it thinking about doing whatever neccesary to keep my baby healthy and thought I'll deal with the rest after the birth and then was thrown into motherhood and had an overwhelming need to keep myself healthy for her. Although it seems like a lot to take on in one go, new baby & diabetes, it actually gives you strength to get it under control.

I really wish you & your baby the best of luck for the future. x
