My son is just coming up to having been diagnosed for 2 years. We only found out fairly recently that he is entitled to this and have been wading through the form. This link has been really really helpful http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Living_with_diabetes/Financial_entitlements/Disability_Living_Allowance/

His nurse told us he would be automatically eligible but that the rules are you have to have been diagnosed for 3 months.

You mentioned that your” child Tax Credits went up as well” I would be interested in mote info on this, thanks

This was done automatically for us. We received a letter to say that the DLA had been awarded to our daughter and then we got another letter to say the tax credit disabled amount had been awarded aswell. We did not apply for the increased tax credit it is done by the DLA who inform the tax credits dept.

hI all, My son is 10 and has type 1 diabetes diagnosed a year ago, i claimed DLA and got the high rate but i am now in the process of claiming again as a year has passed and have now had the decision back that hes only entitled to the low rate the reason being he is now old enough to take responsibility himself, i am at the moment appealing against this as i do not agree with this at all, he may be doing some things himself but only having diabetes for 1 year i myself find this hard to control and this is a life threatning condition i feel so digusted. Has anyone else had this problem and could give me any help or tips ??? thanks

Hi, my daughter Lottie is 5 and was diagnosed T1 almost 2 years ago. We get the middle rate of the care element of DLA and have done from 3 months after Lottie's diagnosis. I filled in the forms myself and had no problems with the claim. I did include a care diary for a weeks worth of care. It included everything that we did to care for Lottie and how long it took. I left it up to them to decide what was care that was extra to that of a 'normal' child.

I also claim Carers Allowance as I would be unable to commit to any work at the moment with Lottie's diabetes being so variable and unpredictable. If you are claiming DLA for your child and not working because of the care your child needs then you claim. I included the same care diary in this claim too.

Andrew gets low care for help with getting around and medium rate for help with personnal care. I also applied for and was granted a carers allowence, as i was unable to continue working as Andrew had such a bad period of illness with his diabetes that i had to take a lot of time off and out of work. But can still work up to 16 hrs a week, but only work 5hrs a week.
Any questions? i'd be glad to answer if i can

I think it's important that everyone knows this is an entitlement and also that if you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit this also adds a Disabled Child Element to your payments too, so another £2540 per year although on your allowance.

However, I'd be really interested to hear of anyones experiences of anyone receiving DLA when their child reaches 16. As far as I am concerned the additional costs and support doesn't disappear overnight on 16th birthday like the payments do and with my son, a recent school trip has made me realise just how much adult support and intervention he still needs over and above that of his peers.

This date for us, is approaching and although I've heard of one parent having success in her application for her son, as her Clinical Nurse Specialist completed the DLA paperwork, I think it would be valuable to share experiences.

I was lucky enough to receive DLA at the first time of asking when my son was diagnosed and I'd be happy to offer help to others with the onerous task of filling those endless forms in.

Any advice you could give would be appreciated, my sister has cerebral palsy and is always having her DLA revoked and having to go to constant assessments etc.

:D

I have received DLA for my son since 1st diagnosed at 18 months. He is now 13 and at last review it was reduced to lower rate for care. I have assumed when he is 16 he will apply on his own behalf though reading posts here I'm now not sure that is the case.

from everything that i have read, it is important to write absolutely everything down that you do for your child to do with diabetes... time wise even down to pharmacy trips etc. my dn told me to make a list as i go along for a week b4 i send the forms off... atleast then when filling the forms in you can refer to the notes.
Also, photocopy forms before sending them in, so then when renewals are due, you have the last forms to refer to.
My daughter is 18months and i have been awarded high rate care.
