help urgent advice ambulance or not

son hi bm, ketones, abdo pain
had sleepover last night, home this morning obvious ketones, big correction on novo - i said try 4 units (sick day amount) he gave 14.
2 hours later still hi - ketones gone from 3.6 2 hours ago to 4.6 now.
no car
husband due home in an hour
shall i wait or call an ambulance?
still lucid, just in pain and has vomited once.
no deep breathing
prob too much food and too little or poss missed lantus last night - when i talk to him he just gives me 'the finger' so i dont know

If you've tried the correction doses and he still has ketones and high sugars then, I'm sorry to say this, I think you need to take him into hospital. High sugars and ketones plus vomitting etc. sounds like it could be beginnings of DKA. If it is DKA then it can get very serious very quickly if not treated. Not trying to scare you, but I think hospital may be best place for him. As other have said, call NHS direct and see what they say first. Hope you sort things out! X

Just over 2 years ago I returned from a 3 week trip to Iraq, with a very bad case “Sadam's Revenge” that was later diagnosed as a form of dysentery. My brother picked me up from Heathrow and commented on how dreadful I looked, I stayed with him overnight and was violently ill most of the night when I wasn’t on the toilet.

In the morning I was worse and told my brother to call an ambulance. Well what a performance and effort to get one to come, I am type 1 and had very high ketones and hadn’t eaten for 20 hours. Eventually I was admitted to A & E where a young doctor injected me with something that stopped me vomiting but not the diarrhoea. After 3 hours a nurse came in and told me I was being discharged, I was more than surprised and asked to see a diabetic doctor. The young doctor came back in and said I had to go home now. I explained that we were in Winchester and I live in Aberdeenshire. I was told to get a B & B!!

I refused unless I could speak to my GP or diabetic doctor. Well the young doctor went off to get reinforcements to get rid of me and came back with a Consultant who asked me a few questions and then proceeded to give the young doctor the biggest of all bollockings. I was immediately admitted to a medical assessment ward and care and treatment commenced but though I was supposed to be in isolation the hygiene standards by several nurses were very slack.
When I got home 10 days later and 5 kg lighter my brother told me that that Winchester General had to close the whole wing I was in because the infection had spread.

I spoke to one of the nurses about the event and she said that to get an ambulance “you really have to lay it on”.

All hospitals have PAL's Departments. Ring the hospital concerned, speak to a PAL's representative and ask who you should complain too. If they do not contact you, I would go to the Citizens Advice and ask for a Solicitor who specialises in negligence cases. If you are low on funds, you will, I hope, qualify for Legal Aid. I complained over a similar incident years ago but things have now changed then you complained to the FHSA. You will ot get compensation unless there is some resulting problem. This affecting your wife or your child when he/she is born, which I hope will not happen, but it is a means to slap the idiot who presumed you could get her there under your own steam. What's hapened to checking simple things with family? Have you money for a taxi, are you mobile? Too simple or maybe we've just lost the care component of the NHS.

I hope everything has been successful after this event. Love to your wife and her new baby.
