Hello pegasus, sorry to hear of your dental problems. I have had similar problems with my teeth and gums, but I was refered to the Periodontal dept at Guys Hospital in London. Have you been refered to a specialist clinic to see if they can save your teeth as taking all your teeth out is such a huge thing to have done, isn't there another procedure, have you been able to discuss all the alternatives with your dentist?

I just want to wish you good luck and I hope all goes well. I will be thinking of you.

All the best RRB

thankyou robin for your reply, i first went to hospital to see maxillo who did nothing for me but told me to see a dentist, so took a veery long time to get on the waiting list the majority of my teeth are crowns and a bridge only 6 of my own teeth left which all have to come out to stop the disease spreading the dentist told me he also said it was a denture job, so i am unaware of what happens next and would love to hear from anyone who has gone through same, how long without dentures? although i have heard temp ones can be fitted same day of extractions to heal the gums and protect them from germs and infections , much love to all xx

Please ensure that you go to your GP and get a course of antibiotics before you have your teeth removed..

I recently had a tooth out, asked the dentist if I needed antibiotics before it was extracted and was told no. 4 painful weeks later and two courses of antibiotics later I am finally infection free. The infection could have been avoided if I had followed my own instinct and gone to the GP..

I'm due to the have the root of the tooth removed and yes I will be checking with my GP before anything more is done...

Hi pegasus I was in much the same position as you..had mostly crowns and plate with four on it. On Dentist advice I had teeth removed apart from, eye teeth, and had a denture made. I went at 8.30 a.m and had impressions made, and then went back at 3 p.m. and had the extractons. Followed his instructions and had no problems at all. (This is not a temporary plate) Hope all goes well for you. I am type 1 also

thanks vee, did you go into hospital to have them out? did they fit dentures the same day? how long is the timeline from dentist referal to hospital to the day of action? really sorry for all the questions but its a worrying thing to have done and every single one of mine have to come out to stop the spreading of it.

Hi pegasus, sorry for delay in reply...this 'holiday period' runs away with time!! Happy New Year by the way! To answer your questions, no I did not have to go to hopsital, this was all done at my dental surgery. As I did not have a hospital referral I just got the next available appointment and had it done. Not too much time really to worry about it! Yes dentures fitted the same day - impressions 8.30 a.m. and back at 3.p.m. for extractions and dentures in. This was the best thing to happen for me as no more problems with infections, gum disease etc. Now I just have to go for check-ups 3 monthly, unless any problems. Hope you get on well on th 11th. Be good to hear of your outcome after your appointment.

If you are having a general anesthetic for the removal of your teeth, that would mean having to avoid food for several hours before the operation. I would double check with your dentist and hospital staff regarding this issue.
With Local anesthetic it would mean you being awake, but you would be able to eat normally.

I know some hospitals carry out operations on diabetic patients with the use of hypnosis, which means you can eat normally too.

you should have the impressions done, and the denture should be fitted more or less the same day as the removal of the teeth.

As for seeing the hospital dentist, that depends on the hospital waiting list. Your first appointment should be with the consultant or lead dentist, to examine your mouth and teeth, they should also take a full medical history from you, then discuss various options of how to resolve your oral problems.

Hope this helps

Hope this information helps

Hi all new to this site but been reading comments and responses for a while and have picked up some very good advise. Been T2 for 5 years and have struggled to keep it under control . Had one mouth infection , and abscess after another , which played havoc with my my sugar levels. Had full set of teeth extracted 6months ago, not a pleasant experience but now I feel it was for the best as I no longer get any pain and feel better for it.

Heyyy im Type 1 Diabetic and i went into hospital on 8th December to have a general anastethic to remove 5 teeth, the surgery went well although when i was coming from the recovery my blood sugar went quite high but because of the surgery the anastethic nurse told me it was because of the stress my body went through, it soon came down and i was allowed home within a couple of hours after the surgery..... Once the dentist reffered me i think i waited anout 8-12 weeks to actually have the surgery done.... Good luck with it all, hope everything goes well for you :)....... Rachel x
