Hi TT,

I think this is where a dietitian will be helpful who specializes in people with bowel disorders, your wife could ask to see one through her hospital clinic or via her gp.

Unfortunately the dietician she was referred to was pretty hopeless (maybe its down to NHS standard) but they kept telling her to eat things that she couldnt eat and generally didnt seem to know / care :(

That's a shame Tim, as your wife has a few ongoing health issues I would be reluctant to suggest ideas......hence why I thought that a dietitian may be helpful here.

Yep, sounds very similar to me? Has your wife ate jelly babies as hypo stoppers at all?

My problems with bowel been since being on pump.. I was told by one chap at hosp that it seems that pumps can be causing bowel probs. i have written a number of posts ref bowel probs... Latest one was under hyp stoppers....

Briefly my probs seem to start after being told I must have jelly babies as hypo stoppers. Admitted to hosp a&e 3 times in 3 months with impaction in bowel.
Saw gastro.. Shapes test came back abnormal. Slow transit in colon... Now waiting till April to see gastro again.

However gastrochap asked whether I had changed anything about my diet.. Now realise the only thing is jelly babies.

I too was told originally to do low fibre, low fat diet... Then to go back to normal eating until see gastrochap. So now have no jelly babies.. Kendall mint is really fast for small qty, or dolly mixtures. I eat at least 8 lots of fruit n fibre most days.... And stomach is I believe back to normal for past two months at least..

No literature anywhere on internet about jellybabies and bad stomachs, but I believe that for me the gelatin was stopping my linings of stomach working properly.

But that is just me and my body... And nothing to prove that jellies causing it... But no impacted bowel since and looking and feeling that my stomach is back to normal.

If I get horrible blocked bowel again, then I know I am wrong and will post to say so...

I find that intermediate fasting can be a very effective way to drop the pounds. In additional to cleaning up your diet, "when" you eat is important too. For example if you change your eating schedule to where you eat all of your meals within an 8 hour window, you will lose weight.

Outside of the 8 hour window, consume nothing else but water. So breakfast, lunch and dinner all have to be eaten which 8 hours. Within 2 weeks, you'll start seeing the weight come off.

Hi donnellysdogs (sorry this isn't of help to original poster's query), I use jelly sweets for hypos but as I'm vegan I use Goody Good Stuff - Sour Fruit Salad - 5g CHO per jelly I worked out. I take 2 or 3 of them depending on how low I am & other factors. First came across them in the special diet section in Waitrose but got my health food shop to order in a whole box of them for me so I have a plentiful (& cheaper!) supply. http://www.goodygoodstuff.com/ Anyway, point is they're gelatin-free.

I'm also pumping insulin, I've not heard before about any links between pumping and gastric disorders. I know if you tighten up control rapidly, like through going on a pump, you can accelerate Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (which I have), so it makes sense that the same could happen with blood vessel growth in the gut. But that's a sudden tightening up of control rather than a pump issue. And the jelly approach to hypo treatment is not related to pump use, just another way of treating hypos. I'm just trying to work out here why pumping itself could cause bowel problems??? Worried and highly intrigued!

@tinytim - that's an awful dietician you saw there! Is there more than one at the hospital? Could be worth making enquiries via your GP or consultant about seeing a different dietician, if at all possible. It does sound like highly specialist advice is needed..

Hi
It was just one comment from the gastro surgeon on one of my nights when I was taken into a&e... He said that he thought there was more incidence of diabetics on pumps having gastro problems, but there was no data, research or trials etc to confirm it...
I did a posting on it a while back asking whether anybody else had any experience of pumps and gastro probs... But nobody as far as I recall came forward.
I will log on to website suggested... Many thanks for that Ingrid. Thankyou
