Hi - am on the same meds as you and mine used to do this. I found that if I am not doing anything after my meal and dosage, my level will stay high, so I cut down carbs when I will not be able to burn them. I work nights, so it is in the morning - if I had cornflakes and banana before going to bed, I would have a very high reading when I woke up, would wake early as they are high carbs and I would be hungry, but would not have burnt them off, so I can only suggest lower the carbs when you are going to watch tv or before bed - you don't need the energy if you aren't going to use it. This is the only thing that works for me, but we are all different......

Hi Noosrat

If I went to bed on a BS of 4.9 I would also wake up with a higher blood sugar reading (usually 11.3mmol - spot on each time which I find odd!) I now try to raise my BS to 7-8mmol before bedtime which seems to get me through the night without any problems. Woke up this morning on 4.6 so very happy with that.

During the night you could be dropping low and as such are experiencing a process where the liver secretes glucose for energy to power you throughout the night and for your wake up hence your higher readings. When this happened for me I actually looked at lowering my lantus rather than putting it up as it turned out I was almost correcting an over dose of my lantus (hope that makes sense). The best thing to do is test test test - trial and error, don't make too many changes in one go and give each change a few days to work to enable you to be able to see the effects.

Good Luck!

Noosrat:
You need to work out what is happening with your levels overnight. This means you have to do some testing during the night to find out what is happening. Set your alarm for 2-3am and see if your levels are rising or falling
It may be gradually rising overnight, in that case you probably need to gradually increase your lantus. If you do increase it as you said you would in another post, you need to leave it for a few days before you make more adjustments.

There is a smaller possibility that it is falling and then your liver is releasing some glucose to compensate (Somyogi)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_Somogyi_rebound
I say smaller possibility because many researchers say this doesn't happen but I've certainly read of people who say it happens to them.

You are on a different insulin to Noosrat. Novomix is a mixed insulin.
It maybe that you have been told to have a small snack before bedtime because of a peak in the insulin (when the insulin is the strongest) The purpose of this snack is to stop you going to low overnight.

You need to ask your doctor/nurse at what glucose level you should take this snack and how much.
If you look online you will find that most bedtime snacks seem to be about 15g carb sometimes with a little protein.

@sameer, try a protein based snack and cut out the carbs, something like an unsweetened yoghurt, a decent full fat (preferably organic) Greek, a small amount makes you feel full, I did and problem solved.

I would agree with this answer I used to be continually waking up high after going to bed with a b/s less than 5.0 I mentioned this to my diabetic specialist and she gave pretty much the same answer. I never go to bed without testing b/s and always ensure I am on more than 6.0 before sleep.
