I'm 55, live in Liverpool and am self-employed, just!

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in November 2012 and was honestly shocked at the possible complications my GP outlined to me, I thought Diabetes was purely a blood disorder. I had two initial blood and urine tests and have since been prescribed oral medication for Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High Cholosterol. I have attended two check ups with the practice nurse, had a meeting with the Community Health Dietician, A Retinopathy test, a check up by a qualified Chiropodist and completed a six week Diabetes X-pert course and have the certificate to prove it.

Have to admit, working from home and with the business struggling I was leading a very sedentary life and living off sugar for the energy, I used to take a small school tuck shop to bed every night and still wake up feeling tired and hungry.

Having been shocked by the GP, I felt it was easier to just dump the sugary stuff, so I've taken to eating more fruit, cut out the fizzy drinks in favour of water, tea and coffee along with some mild exercise, walking the dog. I have dropped from 14st 8ibs to 12st 4 1bs and now have a bmi of 23.9 within the healthy range.

More about me? I'm an animal lover, support Liverpool FC via the telly, like to write short stories for my own amusemnt rather than publication and have a passion for mountains. I've walked or scrambled most of the high peaks in the Lake District and North Wales along with some in Scotland, the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales. Lost my best mate of 30 years to Motor Neurone Disease in 2012 and miss him loads, he was my walking partner and sounding board and funnily enough one of the fittest people I knew, who can tell hey!!

Well that's some of me, always best to hold something back for later, so a big Hi to everyone, hope you're all coping with your Diabetes and getting the care and attention you need and deserve.

I am 49yrs and feel i owe my reasonably good health to being on animal insulin which has turned out to be the best for me. I have tried human insulin and of course understand it can be very good for others. I work for the NHS and love my job. I have a pet cat called Lucy and she will be 14yrs old on 18th April! Hi everyone. My name is June and I live in Nottingham Uk. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2008 at age 52. I knew very litte about the disease and was given very little information at the beginning - other than my GP telling me that I would now qualify for free prescriptions - as if I cared? I was given 2gm metformin and 1 80mg gliclazide. For about 4 years I managed my sugar levels really well [although I didn't know it at the time] Then, a year ago i stopped smoking and started eating. An increase in weight of about 2 stone followed [from about a 9 stone start] and my sugar levels started to get higher and higher. About 6 months ago, my Thyroid packed up and my weight rose very steeply and rapidly to 13 stone. I felt absolutely dreadful and pretty desperate but, having received the right levels of thyroxine, my weight has steadily reduced to just over 11 stone and i'm working on the rest. My major problem is that my sugar levels haven't dropped with the loss of weight but are continuing to rise. My diabetic nurse has increased my Gliclazide to 4x80mg tablets a day as well at the 2g of metformin but my sugar levels are now permanently above 11, regularly over 20 and once recently at 30. I have another appointment with the nurse tomorrow and, because of the knowledge on this forum, I am going to discuss moving to insulin with her. She did offer at my last appointment but I was terrified at the thought and refused point blank to discuss it. I should have done this much sooner - I've recently had the results of my latest retinology and it tells me that there is diabetic damage to the backs of my eyes. I am so scared of going blind I will do pretty much anything to get my sugar levels back down to below 7. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hello everyone, I'm Marieclaire and have just been told I have "Impaired Fasting Glucose" (IFG), my reading after my Glucose test at the hospital read 6.8. I had been feeling very tired and started to put on weight, however since my test I have cut out carbs and feel much better. I do still tend feel tired but I think that is down to me also having an underactive thyroid.

Hello, I'm Terry, a married lady of fifty-lah-lah-lah-la - diagnosed with Type 1 in December 2002. A bit of a shock at the time but find you soon get used to the injections and the self body scan every hour or so to check everything OK.

Signed up mainly 'cause I've seen the competition for a Wii but also recently did jury service and went onto a forum and quickly got some reassuring answers from people who had already served. Think reading about other people's personal experience is usually very helpful.

Like animals but have no pets at the moment (have had dogs, cats and other assorted little fluffies in the past)(have a few fish in the pond but they don't answer to their names and you can't cuddle them).

Was lucky enough to have been on safari to Kenya 5 times (4 of those since diagnosed). At present work full time as a secretary. Daughter is getting married later this year so quite an exciting time ahead. Bye for now.
