Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

I did one of these courses. I had great hopes of it at the time because I was frightened and bewildered by the diagnosis, and was hoping to have the condition explained to me sensibly, and to be advised on help that was available.
We were told categorically that there was little point in trying to control the condition, testing was a waste of time and NHS money, diabetics inevitable deteriorate, that 60% of our food intake should be carbs, that we should avoid natural (saturated) fats, and be moderate with protein, and finally, that diabetes is caused by overweight, and is a self inflicted condition.
I went home stunned and outraged, because a weeks research had already told me that every single thing the dietician told us was simply wrong. Since then, in two years, I have returned all my measures to normal, and reversed retinopathy, with diet alone, principally by ignoring everything they said.
Questions were brushed off, they just wanted to get through the lecture and go home. We deserved real help and information, but got none.
Diabetes is so common that the medical professionals involved are completely blase about it. Yet to every individual diagnosed it is a major life-shaking event. We have a serious illness that requires intense personal involvement in its care and treatment. They just want us to shut up and go away because there are too many of us.

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

Hi I was diagnosed with Type 2 in November 2012 and immediately signed up for the X-pert course run by Liverpool Community Health and conducted by a Diabetes Specialist Nurse in an informal group setting of about 8 to 10 people.

The course was free and ran for 6 weeks, each session lasting 2 hours. It was an educational but informal setting with each group member encouraged to participate and share experiences, of diagnosis, treatment, knowledge, tips etc, with the Nurse constantly guiding the subject e.g What is Diabetes?, Weight Management, Carbohydrate Awareness, Reading and Understanding Food Labels, Possible Complications and Lifestyle Issues and Understanding Your Medication. Each group member received an 83 page full colour A4 booklet covering the entire course.

The Nurse who ran the sessions was exceptional answering literally hundreds of questions and everyone who attended would have been happy to continue for another 6 weeks. A lot of the myths, fears and pre-conceptions of Type 2 were allayed and the reality of living with Type 2 discussed in an honest and friendly atmosphere.

If I got anything from the course it was that no foods are off the menu just some are better than others, so healthier eating and a healthier lifestyle combined with portion control can do the job. I'm now 2st 4lbs lighter, have a bmi of 23.9 within the healthy range and an average blood sugar level of 5.8.

Don't know if this course is available nationwide, but I think it should be the benchmark throughout the NHS, a really positive and pro-active experience.

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

Hi 3 years after being diagnosed diabetic, i was offered a 6 week course called Juggle. only 6 people attended the sessions, and I was the only one there who wasn't grossly overweight. The whole course focused on the NHS standard of healthy eating - 30% carbs/30% veg and 30% protein at every meal. The nurse practitioner explained how the medication we used affected sugar in the body, but did this again at every session which felt like a real waste of time and very, very patronizing after the 3rd session. We didn't have an opportunity to discuss carbohydrates, what would happen if sugar management became difficult, the possibility of needing to move on to insulin or many other factors that diabetics might need to think about. the whole focus was on eating a healthy 'balanced' diet and leaving it to the health professionals to advise on the appropriate drug levels needed. Very disappointing. Thank goodness for forums like this!

I went on the DAFNE course which I found very interesting and helpful. Unfortunately it has not improved my control but has caused more problems, I find that my blood sugars are more up than down and if I try to change the insulin ratios things just get worse. I have suffered depression because of it.

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

I've recently completed the DAFNE course. Has been a huge help, although not solved my issue of the dawn phenomenon, but diagnosed this. Without a pump I cannot do anything about it, also has helped so much with my eating habits and also picked up I may have celiac disease. Altho the outcome not great. A reason for my issues is better than none :) .. Would recoemd to anyone. Shame I had to wait so long :(

We did a carb counting course with our T1 daughter - I actually found it pretty pointless as we had taught ourselves to carb count when we kept being fobbed off by the DSNs. The only good bit was the free Expert meter and copy of Carbs and Cals!

I did ask about it, apparently it's a PASTY course in Plymouth... Runs for a couple of hours a week for 6 weeks, but the times are such that I would have to take a day off work to attend - and taking a day off work every week for 6 weeks isn't an option...

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

Did a Desmond course in February 13. Really thought I would come away with constructive advice. Instead told being obese, not exercising and living on junk food was the reason for my type 2; I explained I rarely ate junk food was not overweight and exercised daily, went on to explain that I tested blood sugars and had cut out carbs that spiked my blood sugar level.
I might have well been speaking in Mandarin because the trainer just looked at me said nothing and continued her mantra on lots of starchy foods, exercise and losing weight.
A lot of emphasis on how we would be moved through the medication process and if really lucky would end up on Insulin. The only information that benefitted me was the advice on reading food labels.

I have learned more from reading how food is dealt with by the body and avoiding foods that spike blood sugar levels and with that information, I have by using a blood sugar monitor reduce my levels from 16.6 down 10.6 and reduced my weight from 160 pounds down to 149 pounds.
I still take my one Metformin each day but have cut out all the starchy foods recommended as essential by Desmond.

I did the Desmond Course about 6 months after being diagnosed with type 2. It was two mornings spent with a variety of folks, many of them surprised like me to have been diagnosed. When other people talked about their symptoms, you realise what has been wrong with you over the last year or so. You don't feel lonely and lost anymore. Being with people with similar symptoms, makes the condition less of a 'problem'.

I've done the DAFNE course, and was a lot of information to take in and felt like everything i'd been doing for 20 years had changed, it's quite complicated changing how you measure your intake from carbs to cpu's. Hopefully it'll get easier

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

I have done the DAFNE course and I think it is absolutely fantastic.

I did find it difficult to get my head round at first considering I have came through from the dark ages of diabetes treatment and management..... I mean I still remember having my insulin injected with a glass syringe!!!!!

But once you get into it - it is really good. Unfortunately at the moment my blood sugars are all a mess due to a muscle complication requiring me to have alternating doses of steroids. As everyone knows these can mess around with your blood glucose levels but my Consultant is superb and she manages somehow to squeeze me into a busy clinic to help me out.

But back to DAFNE.... absolutely go for it. I love it.

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

Never heard of Dafne till I moved house and county, diabetic nurse put me straight on it and what an eye opener. 55 years of " do what we say not what you think as we know better", I now know I can eat when I want, even between meals as long as I test blood and give appropriate insulin. The world is mine to take as I now feel alive again and it is all down to going on the Dafne course.

If you haven't been on it I would recommend that you do.

I am on a dafne course at the moment with diabetic nurse and nutritionist at the royal hospital in Edinburgh. I went for a week and iv been diabetic for 16 years. Developed diabetic retinopathy in left eye and lost the sight in left eye 2 years ago. The dafne course really helped and its a great way to get tips from people directly cos sometimes msg boards get really confusing and people go off topic. I find it easier to talk to people. Learnt a lot. Recommend it highly.

Re: Have you done the DAFNE/DESMOND courses or anything simi

Have done a simalar one called SADIE (Skills for Adjusting Diet and Insulin in East Sussex) in eastbourne. Its the best thing i've done for my diabetes. got my three month review coming up soon.
If your looking at going on the pump in east sussex you need to compleat the course before being considered.

My consultant is one of the SADIE leaders so she's been asking me to do it for a while. Not sure if SADIE is run in brighton or if its DAFNE. We had someone from one of the previous SADIE course's and they came from seaford. I would ask your consultant about it.

I have been a diabetic for 22 years with randomly high blood sugar levels, i have been on 4 injections a day with various control. I recently attended the DAFNE course 4 weeks ago and have never felt better in myself.basically It teaches you to match your insulin to the carbs you eat. My bloods have been single figures, i have been sleeping better, no ketones and plenty of energy!! I would recommend this option for every diabetic, the way forward
