injecting in a public place

I'm diabetic and inject insulin; my daughter faints at the sight of needles (actually prob even just the thought). Yes, a wuss. However, I am aware that this is quite common and therefore will usually take myself off somewhere private to inject if I can't do it discretely at the table. I have managed to inject myself sitting on a picnic blanket with her sitting a couple of feet away without her even noticing. Come on, people - don't make a fuss. Some people don't like needles; they are a necessity in our lives but don't inflict unnecessarily on the squeamish petal people.

I was in an eatery in Aberdeen when I felt myself starting a hypo. I asked a member of staff where I could inject and was told "Not here! we don't allow drugs in here", I explained it was insulin for my diabetes and if I didn't inject soon she would be picking me up off the floor or calling an ambulance and I would be calling the press and my solicitor. Oh use the ******** loo then. I then sat down where I was and started to get the pen ready and was told in no uncetain times to get the **** out!. I just looked at her and did the injection them ate 5 jelly babies (as suggested in the care pack). As soon as I said I was feeling better she said oh well I will get your order now, I said No need, after those jelly babies I don't feel hungry now and walked out. I could hear her seathing behind me
I found another cafe just across the street, I must have looked out of sorts as the lady behind the counter asked if I was ok, when I explained she said sit down one tea and a ham salad sandwich on its way (No charge). Seem her son is type 2 also.

Ok I would like to clear up the confusion caused by my post. At the time of posting I didn't realise I was having a severe Hyper (numbers were over 28) In my cunfusion during the hyper I mixed two separate occasions hence the rather garbled message. A friend (also a member on here) from London realised I was in trouble by the way the message was worded and called my home phone till my partner woke up and helped me recover and called my doctor, was then taken to hospital and kept in till all was well again.

I am type 2, On a Bolus-Lantus regime. I inject Lantus morning and bedtime and insulin three times a day. I recently spent five days in hospital whilst the specialist tried to get my blood glucose numbers down to a level that is more acceptable than the high teens and low twenties (numbers now between 7 and 12.8).

To those that said they "smelled a rat" and those that just jumped on the bandwagon TF my life wasn't in your hands, it is posts like yours that are now making me rethink my membership of this forum.

A don't worry about it I have gotten loads of hate mail on this site but now that you have explained your self all is good again
You do have to admit that what you said ,did not make much sense and did seem a bit fishy .i don't think people were trying to be malicious just rather forcefully inquisitive I would think :)

I certainly wasn't trying to be malicious. I didn't mean to offend. It is fairly common for 'fake' people to join message boards like these and the confusion in your post just meant it was a possibility that you were someone trying to cause trouble or whatever.... Obviously you are not one of those people. My main concern however was the apparent conflicting medical advice.... ie, eating jelly babies for a hypo but then taking insulin too. I was genuinely worried that you'd been given very bad advice on how to deal with your diabetes. Dangerous advice in fact. I've had more than my fair share of that in my time so it's something that I can relate to but anyway that's not the case for you I'm glad to hear.

It's often difficult to read things as people originally meant them when the person is just words on a screen rather than stood in front of you. So I apologise if any of my comments offended you. As I said, it was not my intention to be malicious.

I'm glad you got treatment and that you're working to bring your sugars down. please reconsider your reconsidering of being a member here. This place is full of useful information and helpful people.... when we're not getting our knickers in a twist over whether or not someone is genuine.

I don't inject but I am a type 2 on metformin. I understand that people need to inject but there is a lad on the course I am on has never asked if non-diabetic people mind if it's ok that he tests his blood sugar the inject his insulin and a few people find it off putting as they are eating their dinner. I know you have a right but some people dont like needle or think its horrible to see him do it.

Good point Samantha, I don't think many people would find needles or blood tests pleasant but for type 1 s it is life, so as a type 1 I would say to non diabetics it must be a hell of a lot easier watching someone else do it now and again than doing it yourself for the rest of your life!!!!! So can't really sympathise with them 'being put off there food' by it x

I'm appalled at some of the accounts on here. They are shocking.

Thankfully I've never had an issue even though I do inject in public places.

I was at a football match last week (yes we won :D ) The man sitting next to me injected at half time, I was just aware of a pen type thing being held to his tummy, so if that offended anyone they had to be pretty sad. I was offended by the man 2 rows in front smoking

I've managed to inject while at the football aswell, amazing how nobody notices - either that or nobody has ever bothered enough to challenge me on it

People who think they are the only one's in the world that have any problems, animal abuse of any type
I think what does help is that the public are slowly becoming more "acceptable" these days. I might be wrong but maybe dbecause there is a higher incidence of diabetes these last few years of people with diabetes that people recognise that we need to do what we need to do. Unfortunately though there will always be that number that have an inssue

I inject into my stomach and have never found this a problem in public, as I do it discreetly. However, on a few occasions, if I am surrounded by children who do not know me, I may go to the toilets, although I always feel injecting in a public toilet could be somewhat unhygienic ! If adults don't like to see me inject - tough - I am a grand mother so unlikely to be injecting drugs! I would be quite happy to explain to children what I am doing, but if I surprised them I may frighten them, and that would be cruel and embarrassing all round ! Obviously universal knowledge of Diabetics would be the best policy.

The only place that I feel a little weird taking a injection is in the gym, people already think I am on steroids, I still do it wherever but I always inject into the muscle iv been training so it might appear I'm on steroids . =-/

My daughter injects in public all the time mostly people don't notice too busy with their own lives! I remember when she was first diagnosed she was so self conscious about injecting when we were out we often went to the toilets to do her bags, makes me a bit ill now to think we did. X

If their eyes don't like what they see, don't look. I never gave permision to have diabetes so most definately don not need permision to treat it !! :D

If there is only a couple of people Then yes I will ask just to be polite. But to be honest if they have a problem with it then I'll point out that its much more hygenic for them to go in the toilets while I do my jabs

I have never been asked not to, but have had strange glances & at times felt the need to explain that I am not a druggie. I decided a while ago to stop going to the loos to inject, although the looks of disgust at injections from my colleagues at times is upsetting. I now inject discretely, normally through my clothes, so it doesn't look like an injection. Whilst this may not be right for everyone, I find it works for me.

I always inject and test my blood sugar levels in public. I am shocked that anyone would be offended by it. An asthmatic wouldn't need to ask permission to use an inhaler.
