I joined this forum hoping to find some support and help on managing my diabetes in every day life and have found that it is populated by fantasists! There's one guy going on about his diabetes care team making an attempt on his life and another claiming he has cured his diabetes but can only produce a flurry of metpahors and jibberish when asked to substantiate his claim. No offense to the people who I'm sure are rational, everyday diabetes sufferers, but the conspiracy theorists and snake oil merchants are spoiling this site. I am not claiming that T2 isn't a modern disease brought on by our unhealthy diet or that drug companies don't put profits before anything else, but to live in the fantasy world that many of the forum members appear to is nothing short of lunacy. This site should be closed down.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Welcome to the forum ,Annie!I think you'll find that the majority of us are fairly sane and rational and if you read through the forum you will find plenty who have been helped by the very common sense, expert advice of the more seasoned diabetics on this site.Yes we've had our fair share of uniquely opinioned people but ,in the main, they are quickly debunked by the rational majority! This is a forum practically like no other on the internet which has a more tolerant attitude than most.Browse and enjoy, and if you don't want to read the more exotic posts then ignore them,we do!!

AnnieH, it's good that we're allowed to have our say here. Not everyone agrees with the more outré claims, and there is some good advice available. I'm afraid that's the nature of the internet; deciding what's correct and what isn't can be extremely difficult.

I agree, people should have an oppinion on what they think works, like a few people have posted. everyone diabetes works differently. so you cant really judge people on what works for them.

Annie,

This section is called "The Diabetes Soapbox" - the very place where you would expect to find opinions that are non-conformist, maybe sometimes even extreme. *** thats what a soapbox is for!

If you were a visitor to the UK would you judge the population by the gibberish and extremist views that you would hear if you went to Speakers Corner in London? Do you think freedom of speech should only be allowed to people whose views coincide with yours?

That would be on the extreme side, don't you think? :D

Hay AnnieH,

I understand how you feel, I felt the same way about the mis-information that's out there among the natural, orthodox and contemporary medical industries. I've been researching them for over 15 years and I've found that knowledge, from various resources, is power.

We have different types of biochemistry, lifestyle, health conditions, and nutritional needs requiring different treatments.

Searching out all possibilities, sifting through and evaluting as much information as possible, we can make educated decisions about our health.

There are many knowledgeable and experienced people here.

For your sake, I encourage you to focus on what you discern could work for you and learn as much as you can about it.

Happy Trails,

Well put Dennis!
It is your loss Annie. It is shame, because it is debates that sometimes make us stop and think. As grown ups, we all take as much, or as little notice of some posts as we feel they deserve.

I agree with the original poster.

There is so much nonsense on here it makes the site difficult to navigate for the people who are coming here for help.

People pushing herbal remedies as "cure" etc etc. It's all just nonsense and completely unhelpful for people who don't necessarily know it all already.

I really hope your new forum is better. The loons on this one destroy it.

The other forums I post on just delete commercial posts immediately and I'm not sure I've ever seen a thread on "The Cure". Believe me, it makes for so much more pleasant and helpful posting.

And for those of you about to say "well, why don't you go back there and stop bothering us"...? That's probably a fair point.

Fair point,LJ....but,If Carefix had not been allowed to post on the original site then maybe a lot of people on here would not know about trans-fats.I know I didn't before I read his posts. If he was so unwelcome how come there was such a furore when his posted mysteriously disappeared from the forum and had to be reposted due to popular demand.Years ago all the talk of low carbs would have been dismissed and as for cinnamon....well!!The search for better ways to treat diabetes will continue until one day it may be conquered.Until then we keep looking and hoping.People like Truthquest and diabetic man get their chance. If they can't contribute something positive then they go to the great snakeoil pile. The majority on this forum will guide the new and confused. You yourself do a great job of that and long may it continue.

No, I don't want the site shut down. Dennis is great at shutting down some of the more extreme posterers (is that a term?). AnnieH does have a point in that the X File brigade can be a bit off putting.

Hi AnnieH, I for one visit this site everyday and the information I find is very useful, yes sometimes as with the post from Diabetic man alarm bells ring, most people read through this and take no notice. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as with tv if it doesnt interest you turn over or off, it is personal choice. I hope you see through the rubbish and carry on visiting it really is a very informative junieliz

I would like to say that as a reasonably new member I have read some tripe but have also managed - like Saffy - to lower my BS levels by following the low carb threads.

Until I came across this site I was following the advice of my "specialists" with very poor BS control ie readings between 1.8 and 24. Since lowering my carbs my readings are now between 3.4 and 14, a big difference in my book.

As long as you keep an open mind and dont leap blindly into the firey pit of "cures" and "quick fixes", then you stand a good chance of managing this condition well.

There are many people here who have sound knowledge and tried and tested methods of management and can give excellent advice and tips and even comforting words. The more you read the more you get to know who these people are.

Please Annie dont be put off by the few, although my management isnt up to scratch yet it has definately been more manageable since I joined.

I have to say that I like this site and find the discussion topics helpful on the whole.

On the other hand I can see where AnnieH is coming from - as I've said elsewhere, the name "cure" from Carefix is somewhat misleading, and his conspiracy theories can be annoying. BUT, let's be totally fair, the only thing he is peddling is his opinion, and that is fine, and importantly he kept it to a few threads. Shame that some people got too defensive of the cis-oils approach when Flybywire questioned John's credentials - that irritated me!

There are also a few bits of spam - I never liked the stuff, and it is always relatively easy to spot. Maybe a few other threads are strange, but I suspect most folk see them for what they are. Maybe a warning / complaint system might help, i.e. 2 warnings / x complaints and you get kicked out.

The vast majority of stuff on here is really really good, and I am left with a positive view. I have followed a few links - e.g. reducing carbs and eating as much saturated fat as you like - and from my limited knowledge - yes it will bring your BG into a more controlled position, but it might well clog your arteries at the same time. BTW - that's my opinion so far - right or wrong - please don't shoot me.

And as for Dennis - *** - is that short for Fat Finger Syndrome - something I suffer from on the keyboard!!! or does it have some other well intentioned meaning

life's a joy

I have been thinking in terms of having a consensus thread. For instance sarah often says that someone has been posting on the other forum she is on,that is useful to know in terms of who is genuine and who is a spammer. The obvious ones are easy to spot and eliminate. The one this morning, which I deleted, came back and then was commented on it so I have left it for the moment. What do the other mods and admin. think?
