first long run since diagnosis on the 6th June.

Discussed the plan with my specialist nurse, modified basal and bolus doses in the morning and set off with my camelbak full of water, food and testing kit. Plan was to test every 6km, approx 30-40mins, and follow my usual pattern of frequent intake of small amounts of carb and water. Glad to say it went great,
• 3km – water only
• 6km -BG 4.8, 4 dates (20g), water;
• 9km 1/3 bikefood bar (15g), water;
• 12km BG 5.9, no carbs, water;
• 15km 1/3 bikefood (15g) bar, water;
• 18km – BG 5.7, 1/3 bikefood bar (15g), no water ,
• 21km end of run BG 4.7, no carbs, water.
• Walking cool down about 6-800m, once home 3 scoops of bikefood drink in 500ml (46.5g carb) plus a couple of handfuls nuts

Pace was good throughout, 21km done in 2hrs 5mins, so 5:55 per km, which is quicker than I need for my upcoming race in August. HR was all in the right range with average 135, max 152.

Pre lunch BG was 9.9 mmol/l, suggesting that I may not have needed all of the post exercise carbs, or that muscle replenishment was not complete. But overall, a great run, went to plan and a good confidence boost.

cheers Anguse,

current goal is a 70-miler in the first weekend of August. Training was going well until the spanner in the works of T1 about 3 weeks ago. I'm working hard to understand this at the moment with a lot of help from one of the specilist diabetes dieticians in Addenbrookes who's specialised in helping athletes.

All very interesting so far, but I'm determined to not let this interfere with my life. .

I intermittently post here [urlhttp://diary-of-a-barefoot-wannabee.blogspot.co.uk/][/url] when I get time
