More a curiosity than anything...

My hayfever has kicked off big time over the last couple of days and for anyone who has it you know just how horrible it can be. I spoke to the chemist in Boots who said that they are expecting it to be a pretty bad year this year. What joy!

I was just wondering if anyone else suffers from it and whether it has any effect on your diabetes - blood sugar levels etc. I'm already exhausted from the constant sneezing, itching nose and eyes (oh, and I get the joy of ear-ache as well with hayfever!) and it's only been a day and a half!

I have not been a great sufferer since I was a child but this year I have been sneezing and coughing and just today my blood sugar levels have gone up. Early days to be sure but you have put the thought in my head.

Funny you should say that. Doctor says I am not diabetic but had coughing and sneezing building up this week and last night my urticaria flared up BIG TIME this morning over 7mmol again. After all that work getting it stable in 6s -_-

Some hay fever tablets cause drowsiness hun. I know my body does not react well to ANYTHING in pill form (currently on the toilet floor after a morning barf session)

What's the active ingredient in your allergy tablets? Some are better than others

I suffer badly but don't know the effect on my levels as I have no test strips.

For the record. The only antihistamines that have any decent effect on me seem to be fexofenadine.

Personally I use cetirizine hydrochloride tablets and they don't seem to affect my blood sugar at all. There was a very recent study done (13th June) that showed that 4 people out of 1445 (0.28%) experienced increased blood sugar when taking cetirizine. Of the 4 only one has diabetes.

This year has been particularly bad for us sufferers because the extremely late spring meant that all the grass, tree and flower pollens appeared at the same time instead of being spread over a 4 month period.

I have suffered with hayfever and allergies for years and have to take a number of medicines for this. That said I have been Type 1 for 25 years and allergies and hayfever don't really affect my values, though the constant coughing and sneezing and watery eyes are not pleasant. Agree with Dennis, the late spring has made this year particularly bad. :)

Hi,

I have recently been on holiday abroad (for 2 weeks) and since coming back my bs has increased. Previously, my bs averaged about 6-7 at each reading, but since coming home it ranges between 9-12. Can anyone help? I am at a loss as to how this can be. The only other change in my routine is that I am now taking Cetirizine for my hayfever.

Any advice would be appreciated :(

Forget the "medical" remedies, go down to the supermarket and buy some Camomile Tea bags. Camomile on its own is pretty disgusting, but Camomile and Lime or Camomile and Spiced Apple are both pleasant. Make it up as a strong tea. Add sweeteners if you want. You don't have to believe in it, just try it. Right from the first few sips it really works. If it was a medicine it would be worrying in it's effectiveness.

hi,

I have it very bad but i tried almost every tablet there is on the planet but now i use Prevalin nose spray...fantastic and i dont get drousy. Hayfever affects me also in my apetit. When i am sneezing and chesty i find it hard to eat which can affect my insulin regime but as i am on a pump i lower the pump rate.

I am suffering big time! My hay fever has increased over the past 20 years but this year my bs are off the chart. Is this due to the hay fever?? I don't know! And I'm really fed up now! Have been taking Loratadine, changing this morning to Cetrazine see if that will make a difference! Fed up now!!

As aforementioned everyone is feeling it unusually greatly this year, even those who have never suffered with it previously :/ I just came back from a camping trip and have been between 7.5 and 12 the entire time :(

So err.. I am going to trial this chamomile tea thing because I actually love it but haven't bought it in a while. Doesn't make me drowsy at all either...

This year May/June 13 I have suffered pretty bad with Hayfever, I feel totally exhausted, my diabetes nurse said the hay fever is not linked in anyway with the condition, and has said the exhaustion is the body fighting off the allergy, I have been advise to buy some tablets called cozonline or something like that ! But my God it's a bad year for hayfever !

Oh gosh!

My hayfever seems to have gone off the scale in the last day or two!

Double/triple doses of antihistamines only partially effectual.

Help! <sniff sniff>

So it also makes your bs level rise does it??

<groan> haven't got strips to test sadly.

I haven't noticed an increase in my BG due to hayfever but then I don't test much anymore due to cost. I am suffering badly from the hayfever though. Normally I use Beconase spray and occassionally Cetrizine tablets if it gets bad, but this last week thats not been enough. today Im practically sitting on my hands to stop myself scratching my eyes out!!!! They are sooooooo itchy! Goning to pick up some eye drops from the surgery tonight. Did pop to the chemist this morning to buy some but didn't fancy paying £8 when I could get some free tonight........now Im having second thoughts!

I Hate Hayfever!!!! Never used to get it until a few years ago.

I have suffered with Hay fever for over 40 years taking beconase and puriton all year round since being diagnosed diabetic in 1975 My imune systen is slowly failing me. Every time I go to the doctors I get given more pills. The Diabetes specialist does nothing except say I should have a gastric band as my weight has increased since side effects with victosa 3 years ago

Iv'e always had hay fever. And a cough that drives me nuts. I'm scared of trying any new Tablets or Nasal Sprays. I was treated for Asthma for over ten years. A Brown inhaler and a Blue one. I saw a professor a few years ago who deals with Asthma. To find out I never had Asthma. He said throw them in the bin. So that's why Any sort of medication scares me. I'm so cautious now after so many allergic reactions to Anti Bio's and any other new things.

If you have allergies and a chronic dry cough did the specialist not consider the possibility of cough-variant Asthma? It doesn't present with the same symptoms as regular asthma unless you are running or drink cold drinks etc or your reaction to allergens is to have an unproductive cough. If the inhaler helps I'd use it, and I'm pretty medication-phobic/anti-pharma myself.

I suffer all year round with cough and runny nose. Now Sneezing has having ago at me. Its so embarrassing when i'm in a supermarket and it sets of worse, I'm terrified of taking anything for it .As Iv'e had so many bad reactions to medications. And while i'm coughing and sneezing people ask me, are you alright. As if I could answer while doing all that. For ten years they had me down as Asthmatic. I was on two inhalers. The I got lucky and saw a professor. who said . Never in a million years have you got Asthma. So I threw them away. So that's only one thing I was not supposed to have. now I don't try anything. Too many side affects of Medication. Anyone know what effects Piritin or nose drops work like. :problem:
