I do my own diet, making everything from scratch.

It most closely matches the low carb, high fat as I eat a fair few nuts and quite a bit of dairy.

Breakfast tends to be some fruit, nuts and a Benecol yoghurt drink.

Then if I have something with carbs for lunch, I don't for tea and vice versa, although its only a small amount of carbs that I have in this one meal.

For example, yesterday I had bacon, eggs and mushrooms for lunch, then tea was a salmon and vegetable bake (bake topping was a small amount of homemade low carb bread crumbs mixed with cheese), this was served with courgettes that had been fried off in a bit of butter.

Today it'll be smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, I'll have my fruit and nuts for lunch and tea is roast lamb with veg, the small amount of carbs will be the flour in my homemade gravy and my homemade Yorkshire pudding.

Been doing this since diagnosis 2 weeks ago and have lost 4lb, not much but better than nothing.

Oh and I'm a probably 1.5 (awaiting antibody test) with high ish cholesterol (both good and bad) and I cycle 3/4 times a week. When I cycle I have a small carton of apple juice topped up to 600mls (so 1/3 juice, 2/3 water) in my drink bottle.

Football. Bad manners.
My diet is basically Atkins Induction - see Viv's Modified Atkins Diet which is a Sticky Thread on the Low Carb Diet Forum. At the moment I'm probably eating about 50/70g carb daily - summer is bad for me 'cos there are some fruits I can't resist. Atkins suits me - I can't tolerate much carbohydrate.

I've lost over 4 stone so far, and my BGs are hardly ever out of the non-diabetic range. BP and blood lipids also good. Last HbA1c was 5.3.

I need more weight off and I want to join the HbA1c 4% Club!

My diet is basically the diet I was 'prescribed' when diagnosed and works well for me. It's not a weight loss diet but together with exercise and insulin has helped keep glucose levels below 6% for over 8 years.

I eat about 1800 cals if I'm active, less if I'm more sedentary of which 600-720 come from low GI carbs (150-180g). I might eat more fast acting carbs when running or hill walking.

The nearest diet in the list to mine is low GI but that's only for the carbs , with the emphasis on mono unsat fat it could also be called Mediterranean
For each main meal
1/2 plate veg or salad (dressed with an olive oil dressing)
1 portion protein (poultry/ meat/fish/egg)
A low GI starch
Fruit at one main meal
Dairy with one meal, that might be a 30-40g portion of cheese or a plain low fat yoghurt (the French dietitians say dairy at each main meal but not to have the cheese every day, but they don't normally drink milk in coffee and tea)

I try to eat oily fish twice a week and another fish at least once a week.
I eat porridge, usually with berries for breakfast
I'm careful about the type of fats I eat preferring mono and poly unsat fats to sat There's a lot of foods that are actually higher in unsat fats than sat fats so it doesn't mean eating lots of 'low fat' foods. (in this part of France duck is almost considered a 'health food'
I eat hardly anything made in a factory.

Re: Newly diagnosed

Hi everyone,

Its been a week that i have been diagnosed with type one diabetes. I was fasting and I just vomited one day so I thought id visit my GP, and when he checked my blood sugar it was 15mmol, so he told me to come back the next day and not to keep a fast, so that's what I did. And when he re-checked my blood sugar it was 16mmol. so I got rushed to hospital. When one of the doctors took my blood samples they told me that my blood sugar reading is 32.1mmol which is too high and kept me for three days with an 50ml drip of insulin.

I am at home now. I take the Lantus injection (8units) in the morning and the Novarapid inejection (4 units) three times a day. But only once on Friday my sugar reading was 6.8mmol other than that my reading is always high!

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
I dieted for 6 months to a year when first diagnosed, lost a lot of weight and now dont diet at all unless I actually want to loose a few pounds.

I dont eat as many carbs or as many calories as I did before I was diagnosed and I will choose lower GI foods where possible providing I like them but I wouldnt call the way I eat a diet.

Ive always considered diets are for weight loss. I dont want to life my life on a diet thanks :D

I've no idea of what 'low carbohydrate' diet means so this question is a bit pointless to me. Is a person who has reduced carbs from 350g+ to 200-250+ on a low carbohydrate diet? Who knows!

Giverny has already posted a link to the Community pages of the forum to say that a Low Carbohydrate diet is up to 130g a day, so anyone eating 130g or below can select that option if they choose.

Hi,

I'm not on a diet per say; but I do try to eat higher fibre and limit my carbs. I don't try to "low carb" as such, just not go overboard. My average day would consist of about 100 - 130g of carbs; not sure how that compares to other diabetics.

I never hear fibre being mentioned by health professionals in relation to diabetic eating anymore. It was a key part when I was younger and certainly still helps to iron out any bumps for me. Today the focus seems to be on "you can eat anything you want, just count it and inject for it". This is well and grand to a certain extent, but for those that wish to improve their well being further, I do feel that some info on healthier eating relating to diabetes would be helpful. Fibre wasn't mentioned at all in a recent DAFNE type course I attended, until I asked for info on it at the end of the talk. (Then again, maybe I'm outdated and it isn't really of help??)

I do have "blow outs" (usually involving wine and crisps....) occasionally, but try to cover these with my insulin to minimise damage.

With injecting and taking care of my diabetes more I'm putting on weight (not to mention giving up on running and other activities due to joint and eyesight issues). But for now my focus is on my BG levels. Once I've a better handle on those I'll start to think more about my weight and how to get on track with that.

Thanks ... missed that. I had previously seen 100 for low carb and 150 for medium carb. Glad to see there's a definitive answer.

Its been a week that I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. so the doctor has said I can only have three meals a day including breakfast because I have to take insulin three times a day. I take the Lantus and after the meal I use the Novarapid injection.

Is it bad if I have four meals a day?? and not inject after the fourth one?? :?: :?:

I follow my own diet where I basically eat what I like at the same time avoiding fast food, pizza, takeaway and microwave meals. All the food I eat is low fat and healthy, plenty of fruit, veggies no red meat and I sometimes treat myself to some high cocoa dark chocolate (85%).
My blood glucose is averaging at 6.3%

Similar to me, but I couldn't decide on 'Other' or 'None', so I opted for 'None'.

Very simply, I have cut all sugar out of my diet. Shopping takes a lot longer as I check every packet. But type 2 under control without meds

Shocked to be diagnosed in Feb this year. Knew I was overweight and eating a pretty trashy diet. Immediately began low carb eating (60-90 daily which was a huge change for me) and ensuring healthy foods only. Result, 15kg loss and reading of 5.2! Still have to lose 10kg but I am confident that I can do it as I feel better than I have in years. Confession of a former 'chocoholic' - I treat myself with one low carb (2.3carbs) chocolate bar each week.

Cruelty. Stupidity when it is due to laziness. Rules and regulations that are not based on common-sense …
I changed , about 4 months ago, to a low-carb, high fat diet, mainly to eliminate WHEAT from my eating. I did this without knowing that others were doing it ! I ate butter and cream to get me through the withdrawal feeling of not eating any bread, biscuits etc, and have continued in moderation. My blood-sugars have become 'normal', i.e. below 7 on the 2 Hb1ac tests since starting.... I find that i now eat smaller portions also, without thinking about it. I have lost 4kg. My doctor is now concerned about this loss, as she has not quite understood the diet !!!! I am a Type 2 diabetic, diagnosed 35 years ago and after various vissicitudes now on insulin..... It is all interesting, is it not ? :)
