Correction after hypo!

I had a mild hypo earlier at the airport, I suspect the thinking involved to navigate my way through security kicked it off. That was midday-ish.

Was a touch high before tea (8.30) so silly me, I forgot the 24 hour rule and corrected the high while taking insulin for dinner.

So now, here I am, treating my 2nd hypo of the day and feeling a prize idiot!

Oh don't say that, I'm away with work so I need to be on my game tomorrow!

Frustrating! I also have mega munchies with this hypo, trying to reign myself in right now haha

You shouldn't correct a high until you have been hypo free for 24 hours. I'm not sure why but it seems when you do you end up with another hypo!

You learn something every day! I've never heard of the 24 hour rule, why is it you don't get proper information told to you by the specialists?!

The rebound from the first hypo can be because of the liver reacting too late to the low blood sugar and converting its stored glycogen into glucose... so during the following hours the liver is "refilling" and converting glucose back into glycogen... so although you're correction ratio in normal circumstances may be right when you`re correcting a rebound its more likely that you will end up over treating it and so go low again.
Hence the advice not to correct a post hypo high !

Oh my! I've never heard that before and this last few months sugars have been on a blummin seesaw!! Up and down like the proverbial drawers. It's a wonder no one has ever mentioned this to me before, thank you for posting about it!

I'm glad a few of you are learning from my mistake! It's such a simple way of avoiding further hypos unless you're like me and forget!

It's hard to fight the urge to correct the high, but it really does help keep you more stable.

My DSN told me straight away. I think it is also suggested by DAFNE, but I'm still waiting for my place on it

I've not experienced it myself, but you can have a rebound high due to adrenaline and other counter regulatory hormone effects. Maybe I've not gone low enough yet.

Perhaps that's why they say not to correct a high following a hypo for 24 hours?

My first hypo was only 3.9 and the second 3.1. My "high" was 10.9 so I just took and extra half unit to correct. It wasnt a rebound high.... I had eaten an apple and forgot to take insulin with it lol oh well!

Welcome to my world!

Travelling again this week. A 4 hour drive with a slice of malt loaf to keep my levels up, the first slice was OK, the second one may have overdone it. Pre dinner test 10.4, not been here in a while. Took an additional corrective unit for the first time, with a relatively low carb meal. Now back down at 4.8 again.

I was 8.5 before dinner (there was a sneaky digestive an hour before that!) and 3.1 an hour after. I was surprised because it was so soon after taking the insulin.

Restaurant food is a pain at the best of times, never mind repeatedly over an extended period of time. I used to love business travel before this!
