Hi my 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just over 5 weeks ago. She went into a severe hyper and that's how the doctors new that she had diabetes. But just a few days ago she started fitting and collapsed and had a severe hypo and It was so frightening we had to have an ambulance for her!! I'm frightened now tho because her bloods r always really high one minuet and then low the next and it scares me that she will go into an hypo in her sleep and we won't know about it!! Is this normal in the honeymoon stage of diabetes for her bloods to be like this?

Hello and welcome

I'm so sorry to hear of your daughters diagnosis, it must of been so frightening for you and also coming to terms with it.

Which Insulin is she taking and if she is eating high carbohydrates then that can play havoc with sugar levels, because some foods can cause spikes in the blood sugar and go high ,or if too much Insulin is given then severe hypo's can occur, which in turn tends to make the blood sugar shoot up high to get out of the hypo and then it starts again, it can be a vicious cycle.

Has your Diabetes specialist or DSN given you a range for her blood sugar to be in and also, was a bedtime snack advised ( this advice was given because my granddaughter was diagnosed at 2 1/2 years)

The best thing to do would be to contact your DSN with your worries and concerns, as they are the best people to advise with food, Insulin doses etc, ASAP or go back to your GP.

I wish you good luck and I dearly hope the next few weeks will be more positive for you, also its in the very early stages at the moment, so an awful lot to take in and cope with, but it will get a little easier as time goes on. As for 'honeymoon' period, I didn't appear to have one as my pancreas completely stopped and that was it, but that was many years ago.

Sending you my very best wishes, take care

Hi. Sorry to hear about your daughter. My girl is also 7 diagnosed 8 months ago now. What meds is she on? We are in Novorapid & Lantus. I would defiantly contact your DSN as they know can advise on doses. Are there particular times in the day her BG is low? If she us having lots of lows something may need reducing. It's normal to have to reduce doses when honeymoon kicks. If you give yesterday as an example with what foods, doses BG etc we can try & advise a little.

Hi both thanks for replying she on 9 units of nova mix in the morning and 5 units in the evening it was 7 units normally but since she had the hypo the doctor as reduced it to try and keep her bloods high but he didn't explain to me how high he wanted them because he sent her home from hospital with BG of 18.9! Her BG Is lower in the morning and before bed then at lunch and dinner her BG is always high. I'm just scared that I'm doing something wrong or I'm not feeding her the right foods etc because I have had no diet help or anything when it comes to foods and carbohydrates all the doctors have said to me is try her with what I would normally feed her with but just lower the amount of food that she has. So I'm really worried scared and confused that I'm not doing things right for my daughter.

Hi I'm from Wales my daughter is fine in herself she tests her bloods and does her insulin herself which I'm really proud of her for doing :) we test her BG 4 times a day but in the night we normally do about 2 to 3 random BG depending on how low they are. She as different types of foods every day but what I really want is a diet plan so at least then I know what to give her and that it will be safe. I am really glad that I found this site because I feel I will learn a lot from it and its nice to know im not alone with it all!!

You're certainly not alone! Do you access to contact your diabetes nurse whenever you want? Also ask if there us a local support group near you. It's important to meet other parents and for your child to meet other children like her. It's all do new so there's a lot to get your head around. We've never been on novo mix so not sure about doses. Diet it important - you need to look at the carbohydrate content of foods. Did they give you a carbs & cals book - that is really helpful. There are also FB groups like parents of type 1 kids in the UK that's useful for support. Are you on fixed doses or allows to correct for highs? Between 4-8 are ideal readings, though I know it's hard!!

I know novo mix is what they put newly diagnosed on but you cant correct or carb count with it. best to get on a basal bolus asap but then again your daughter might not be ready for it just now.

Thank you all for replying to me it means a lot..... My diabetic nurse is always there when I need her but she's been away for the last couple of weeks an not back till next week so we been dealing with someone who don't really know the history of my daughters diabetes. They didnt give me a book about carbs or calories. She's on a fixed dose of nova mix of 9 units and 5 units but we have noticed a pattern in her BMs now and they are between low and normal at breakfast and lunch then before dinner they are really high they go from 12.0 up to 30.1 on times then for supper they start to come back down again but sometimes they go really low and that's what scares me the most because I'm so scared she will have an hypo in her sleep!! I know we still got a lot to learn and it is a lot to take in and I know we will get there in the end to try and keep her BMs at a steady pace but its just so worrying for us because we are scared we not giving her the right foods or not.

Concerned, Not sure if you have had a sleep hypo yet but your daughter will wake up if it does happen! Expect a grumpy tired child the next day.

As for the right foods there is nothing a diabetic cannot eat so please dont worry about that! you cant count carbs because of the type of insulin being used so dont worry.

Hi ,my little girl is 9 diagnosed 4 months ago the best thing we did for her bloods was to put her on multiple injections so she injects for every meal and every snack over 10grams and we carb count.it hard on you hard on your daughter as well with the injection but it helps keep bloods really well controlled, but there's always the odd crazy reading,I was worried about night hypos I slept the first month in her bed I always make sure her blood around 8 for bed and if I worry I set my alarm for 3 go in her room take blood from her toe and check her then to keep my mind at rest and it does not wake her x hope this helps x

I don't blame you for being worried you need to talk to them soon as if my daughters was that high I would correction dose her to bring it down and you have not be shown this ?maybe they not wanting to much on you at first ?i had to ask for about everything for it to change and they said was wanting to take in too much but I'm gla I did as not being able to control it makes you feel powerless.ask for a accu check expert meter you enter the carbs into it and it tells you what insulin to give ,when your daughter had a high sugar reading it tells you how much insulin she needs to get back into range it's been our life saver !! Also when she's high in the day exercise helps I always send Chloe onto the trampoline !!brings her bloods down a treat .

No ain't been shown how to do a correction dose yet and I would really love to have that accu check expert meter because it sounds great and will have a word with them about it in our next clinic appointment.... What is the daily amount of carbs they are recommended to have a day because I haven't been told how much she should have because they want me to experiment with foods first x

They didn't give a daily amount. she can eat as many carbs she wants as long a the dose of insulin covers it.for example Chloe's ratio insulin for breakfast is 1 unit of insulin to every 20 carbs she eats so if she had 2 toast that were 20 grams each that 40 grams of carbs so she would have 2 units of insulin . She ha different ratios at each meal which have took time to get right and need adjusting slightly some times. Also you need to watch the sugar for the amount of carb the of which sugars shud be at least half of that number.she also injects for snacks.multiple injections has made life easier she can have say a bar of chocolate with a meal as the fat content in it helps keep sugar from spiking .even McDonald's and a fruit bag at weekend she's leading a much normal life now x hope this helps and not confusing you but I did have to push and push for as much info as possible and to get meter I had to prove I could carb count.you will get there its so over wheeling isn't it x
