So I've started on the Newcastle Diet this morning, thought taht the lond weekend was a good time to start so I've got used to the reduction in calories and some of the possible side effects by the time I go back to work on Monday. I'm using a combination of slimfast shakes and Celebraty Slim Soups so I can have some savoury in me diet, and I've already discovered the the chocolate shake heated is good for breakfast as it feels like you're having hot chocolate.

My starting numbers are:

Weight 17s10
Fasting BG 15.9
Waist Measurement 50"

As I understand it the point of the Newcastle Diet is to reduce viseral fat to increase insulin sensitivity so the most important thing to me will be the BG and waist measurement although the weight loss will be good too.

I'll try and keep you updated as to how it's going

Don't forget to have veggies in the evening, and drink plenty of water, good luck.

Day 4 and 1st day back at work. My ibs has just about settled down to the change in diet(I was expecting this one of the reasons I started over the bank holiday weekend) physically good although I've been craving steak and roast chicken! Fasting bg 9.1 this morning which is probably the best it's been since diagnosis. Can't wait to get on the scales on Saturday just hope I can resist til then

Have a great day and let us know how you get on.
If you can resist the scales you are amazing, I know I couldn't!

Hi Shzz46,

I'm already on Metformin, but I'm trying to avoid going on Glicociseds? too as at the maxium dose allowed. I must admit I'm doing the diet without my DN's knowledge, but her dietary advise hasn't been that good (I was having porridge for breakfast with dried fruit in it unknowingly spiking my bg to over 20 when I asked for suggestions for an alternative she said honey as it's a "natural" sugar! Now I'm not a dietician but are the sugars in sultanas "natural" too

Hi,

I'm T2 and on Gliclazide which I have been for over 10 years now.

When I was firstly diagnosed in 2002 I was given a diet sheet at my local clinic which I followed religiously. Despite this my BG levels remained high (10 - 12 over 7 years). I came across this forum and followed advice on the Low Carb section and almost immediately my levels began to fall. I cut out porridge for breakfast, totally cut out milk, reduced my carb intake to 50g per day and so on. My Gliclazide dosage started out at 80mg daily and increased steadily to 320mg daily.

After starting the low carb diet within months my BG levels reduced to the upper 5's where they have remained ever since. Over the same period my Gliclazide dosage REDUCED from 320gm per day to 40gm.

Of course we're all different so what has worked for me may or may not work for you but my golden rule is to maintain a low carb diet. If you try it then good luck. I do miss some foods such as rice, pasta, bread which I do not eat but I do have a 1/2 roast potato with roast Sunday dinner. I have definitely adjusted to the diet and although I do get cravings find the regime relatively easy.

Whilst I don't have milk, I do have plenty of cream and enjoy cheese. To be honest my greatest sorrow is I can only have 1 can of ale before dinner whereas pre-diagnosis I had two!!

All the best.

I did the Newcastle Diet last year and lost quite a lot of weight and blood sugars reduced. This year I started low carb and lost more weight. I am now in non diabetic bg levels and have had my strips and lancets taken away as "You do not need to test...what would you do anyway if you were high?" That from a T1 doctor. Unbelievable!! I intend to buy my own from eBay and continue testing as that is how I got control in the first place-idiots! I now will have no Retinopathy or chiropodist either so it's "well done-now go look after yourself". Not impressed! We still need monitoring even though we have 'sorted ourselves out". It feels like "there you are smart **** sort that one out!"

Nearly at the end of my 1st week. Had a few hunger moments but just have a drink, I'm really missing my builders tea and had a craving for KFC on the way home from work tonight. Got some of the red pepper and chilli soup on the job cooking to try. Bg is around 9 in the morning which is a big improvement on the 13-15 that it was. I'll let you all know my figures in the morning but my clothes are much looser already. Thanks for all your support

Well done so far. I couldn't keep off the scales for a week.

I'll tune in tomorrow for the result!

That's appalling treatment Lindy, you will still get your annual check up won't you? If you don't I would complain.

Hi Lessci,
How is it going? I used to work in a Diabetes specialist pharmacy in Oz and they used this diet alot. In Oz Optifast is available to diabetics on Medicare, in part anyway. Herb teas can help a lot, really good ones that give your mouth something to do. Or water flavoured with mint and ginger that you can sip. Just a tip. It seems to work best when you are busy - weekends can be tougher. How are you finding it? Are you enjoying your evening meals? Coming off is a brilliant time to go low carb, it seems to be easier. Lots of our people stuck to a morning shake after they finished. I'm still reeling from the fact you were recommended porridge with dried fruit or honey. Argh!
And Lindyloo, can't believe they have taken your strips off you! What the.....!!!!!!!
Anyway, I hope you are going well.
I spoke briefly to Prof Taylor (from Newcastle) at the last diabetes conference and he was a lovely guy (not that that is relevant, just saying... :D )

My doctor is giving me a year in which I will get my blood tested twice as usual and if I am still maintaining non diabetic blood glucose no more monitoring. I couldn't believe the speed with which he cancelled my strips and lancets. Wish he was as quick in helping me with my raised liver function which is normally in the 200 region. What really upsets me is no more retinopathy as once your sight goes that cant be reversed.

Well the results are in
Weight 17st that 10 pounds off in a week!
Waist 48" 2 " off and best of all my lowest bg level since diagnosis at 7.7. Really, really pleased. I know the weight lose won't stay at such high figures but it's spuring me on that its working. Time to celebrate with a shake and some coffee!

I didn't see anything about no coffee, just calorie free drinks, and I have mine black and don't include it in my fluid intake figures. Started walking with the girls at lunchtime again and I'm slathering on the body lotion to help my skin shrink back
