Low-carbs?

I had my annual check-up with diabetes nurse today and asked her opinion on the low-carb approach to diabetes, expecting her to poo-poo the idea but she didn't. She seemed quite interested in what I told her about members on this site who had good results on low-carbs. In fact, she said she had recently seen a letter from a doctor who specialises in treating diabetes and he had made mention about low-carbs himself. She said years ago, all diabetes diets were based on counting carbs. and she felt there was a definite swing back to watching the carbs.
So, fergusc, all is not lost. The medical professionials are not all blinkered and who knows we might all one day, as diabetics, be told to follow the low-carb. route.
Interestingly my HBA1c was not not good......8.5......so I immediately made up my mind to make time for my walking again. I came out of the surgery, did a 4 mile walk and my reading dropped to 2.3. Too low but I always knew walking helped lower my readings.
I aim by my next annual check-up, to have my HBA1c down to 6.0 and to have reduced my insulin as a result of cutting the carbs sensibly.

Good for you, chocaholic.

The low-carbers are coming!
You will have to change the name if you're going to come over to the dark side, of course. Something more fat or protein based?

All the best,

fergusc

Yes, Chocoholic, is not a very good name for me, is it? I first used it on a competitions site and at that time was not diabetic. I intended changing it but the regulars on the forum asked me to keep it and it's just easier to stick to one username for everything.

I have to say that this echos my experience.

The nutritionist I saw and discussed with this basically admitted that while high carb is the official (and I personally think insane) line of argument, she completely appreciates how low-carb could work.

the ADA recently released a report saying that low-carb is best. ADA are now changing their stance, so in a few years (!!!) no doubt D UK will follow...

I think I can go one better. I told my diabetic nurse of the information that I had gained here. She took it all in and did a lot of research herself and became convinced.....so much so that she has now put herself on a low carb diet partly because of being a bit overweight and partly because apparently she is pre diabetic herself.
