Opinions on best alcoholic and non- alcoholic drinks for over Christmas please?
I guess Bucks Fizz is out but is wine ok, although obviously anything sweet should probably be avoided. Does adding soda make it better or worse? I used to enjoy Bacardi Breezer but gave this up after being diagnosed three years ago. In addition I am going on holiday on Boxing Day, part of my holidays used to be enjoying a glass or two of sangria but i find this now makes me ill so sadly this is another drink I can no longer enjoy. I rarely drink alcohol at all just on special occasions or the odd weekend but I'd like to know best option to choose.

Here are some suggestions for you. Red wine or dry white wine is OK in moderation. Avoid beers and lagers. Bacardi and other rums are made from sugar so are out. Try vodka, gin, whisky, bourbon but make sure any mixers are 'diet' varieties.

Sorry Mad but I think this is flat out incorrect. Shorts taken by themselves bring my blood sugar down, to keep Blood Levels equal I have a "full fat" mixer 8)

For example a double Grey Goose with Cranberry Juice & Ice works just fine...... :D

Mad is coming from a Type 2 lifestyle while I'm type1 Shelly

Thanks both for replies - I'm type 1.5 (LADA) so I'll bear both your suggestions in mind!

Re:

distilled drinks i.e. spirits should all be OK, as the sugars are either fermented out, or left behind in the still, so vodka, gin, whisky, rum, brandy etc

Dry white wine, dry red wine, very little residual sugar, also dry vermouth, dry sherry

Beers tend to have some residual sugars, lagers less so than bitter

Personally I'll be avoiding port like the plague as it's hellish sweet partially fermented wine with brandy added.

I'm going to be acting as barman this year again, so while I'll be making a whole range of cocktails I'll be sticking to those without sugar syrup, fruit juices or sweet flavoring alcohols like rosso vermouth, grenadine, creme-de cassis etc.

Collins Gem pocket calories counter has a whole section on booze and is very useful.

Adding a diet mixer will certainly make the drink go further and might stop you drinking too much. I find red wine has little effect on my bg so tend to stick with it now unless I'm dining out and I'll have a pint or two of Guinness.

As for non-alcoholic drinks, any diet drink such as cola or lemonade is good or even good-old bottled water, just be sure not to get it from them drink dispensers they use in pubs and restaurants, we've had countless posts on the forum over the years where people have been served normal coke instead of diet, better been safe and asking for it to be served in a bottle or can where you can clearly see it's a diet drink.

I tend to stick with vodka. I only like brandy in my christmas cake or choc truffles :)
