I just had a really Severe dry heaving/retching attack

I have felt really bad all week with my OGTT looming. I was in my house just now and I started gagging really really BADLY. My eyes went puffy and watery, I started sobbing hysterically and I was hysterical, I was begging my Mum not to leave me but she had to go out. I still carried on retching so violently that I felt like my body was going to explode. I also felt like I was going to die imminently. I was on the verge of asking my Mum to take me to A&E for emergency specialist help.

I had to grab a can of Holsten Pils and it has taken me over 90 minutes to drink it but just having that 1 can of beer has calmed me down temporarily. I have suffered from anxiety for 9 years since I was 16 but it has got much worse this year and I have had daily retching nearly everyday since about September this year and it is slowly destroying me and it has now made me agoraphobic. I have lost my job as a result of the retching and I am now too scared to venture more than a mile away from home in case I end up overwhelmed with this disgusting affliction.

Are Diabetes and/or low blood sugar levels related to anxiety? Should I be sectioned? I don't think I can manage to make it to the hospital for my OGTT as I just know that my retching will be off the scale if I have to sit in a medical environment for 3 hours with no food or drink.

Please guys please help me, I am so scared and I feel like I have lost my mind, everything feels horrendous and I feel truly insnane.

Hi,

You need to get treatment for your anxiety; I had a look at your other post. I think diabetes and the OGTT is one thing and needs to be done but you are essentially saying that you are alcohol dependent and are having panic attacks all the time. That needs help and it needs your GP to wake up and address it; if they don't you need to ask to see another GP in the practice.

Feeling like you describe is not normal and is not something you should deal with on your own.

The gastroenterologist idea is also good; there may be other reasons why the retching is happening, but from what you've said it sounds like it is directly related to your anxiety. Kalms and St. John's Wort aren't really enough; you can get a wide variety of help for this but you need to seek it out.

Your GP sounds like a muppet.

Calum, it sounds like you are suffering from severe anxiety/phobia. It doesnt mean that you are insane, even though it makes you feel as if you are. I have sent you a PM, please read it x x

Hi. Quite apart from a possible physical cause you need to have support for the anxiety side. I do voluntary IT work for Mind, the Mental Health Charity. Each area has a Local Mind Association (LMA) that can and does help with a range of concerns such as depression, anxiety, phobias and so on. See if there is a branch near you. You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you. This is not about being sectioned but having the right sort of support before you sink too far. Good luck and take care.

Who have you got to support you? Partner, parents , siblings, friends?

MAke a list of ALL your issues

Book double length appointment with a GP, your favourite or the best and hand the list to them. Take someone if you can and if there is time post a letter for the GPs attention before you get your appointment.

It is quite possible that this retching is a habit or a tic, like a nervous cough. You have to be strong. Think of a small goal for tomorrow, even if it tiny, set out to achieve it and post back tomorrow how you have got on

Good luck and be as positive as you can

Thank you so much. I just had an awful nights sleeping, and Yes I agree I am very certain that the retching is a Generalised Anxiety condition as I have been under acute stress this year and it has got much worse since I left my job in September and then my Nan died then my Dad bit my Mum and we had to move house, I have also been drinking heavily and always feel nervous after a night of drinking, whenever I drink the urge to retch vanishes completely, it is only the next day when I am not drinking that I am retching/sweating accompanied by acute mental symptoms such as crying, cold chills, then hot sweats, feeling like I am dying, missing my Nan, missing my old house, and feeling like death is imminent and a disgusting sense of impending doom.

Good luck and be as positive as you can

So what are you going to do today?

I would urge you not to drink. If you think you have an alcohol problem contact Alcoholics Anonymous. Give the, a ring before things get worse.

Please post back some good news later

Just one little step...
