I will give you the benefit of my story so that you don't make my mistakes. I went to my GP and complained about my memory issues and basically they were not interested but I believe there is a link to diabetes. I continued to complain and they gave me a very simple memory test of drawing an image on a piece of paper which I then had to reproduce on a separate sheet of paper. In total it was 5 images but shown one at a time. They consist typically of a square or a word or a picture ie a bird etc its too easy and you pass. Their response was your memory is fine.
In yourself you know this is not the case but what else can you do?
In my case I found the details of the Local Hospital Authority and their was something called Pals. This allowed me to raise the issues with the specialists and I managed to get help and basically insisted with my doctor that I be referred to a specialist. I obtained a referral to a specialist and had a review and they agreed I do actually have memory issues.
The specialist arranged for me to have a brain scan. Went to the hospital and climbed on the machine, after 5 minutes the technician stopped the scan and apologised as he had started a body scan and not a brain scan.( It was 9.30 at night so I guess you have to expect some glitches).
The results of the scan showed that I have vascular dementia which is causing my memory issues. Now having more tests at the hospital to see what can be done and there is medication available but in my view it would have been better to have known when I first complained. There is no doubt that the diagnosis is a shock (even when you know you have a problem) but it would have been better to start treatment rather than get to my situation 2 years later.
