Afternoon

The answer to this question has probably been answered many times but i seem not to be able to find any answers to what is happening to my blood levels, i am at the moment taking 240mg of Gliclazide with absolutely no movement in levels apart from upwards i am now at a fasting level of 15 from 13 and i am going to bed with levels from between 17 and 24.4. in an attempt to lower my morning levels i now no longer eat breakfast but i still see no movement my level stays at 15 until i eat something and then increases to around 18 and then does not fall much below that for the entire day.

If 240mg of Gliclazide is not lowering my Level is that pretty much a sign that my pancreas is not working properly? or is it as my nurse tells me i am insulin resistant and can anyone suggest what i can do to try and get it lower, i have tried and still do take low carb meals i know it is not the amount of carbs i have, my Dr and Nurse still refuse to send me to see a specialist, any help much appreciated

Cheers
Stillo

Hi stillo
2 possibilities

Gliclazide works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, your pancreas doesn't seem to be responding, this could be because you are in fact a T1 diabetic or your pancreas is exhausted (needs a rest) in which case a period of insulin injections would help.
Either way you need to see a professional as your readings are high.
Could you ask your doctor for a second opinion?

Agree with Homer. Ask for a second opinion. There are many possible reasons your bgs are stuck high and you need a doctor to take your condition seriously.

Hi A little update

yesterday morning felt extremely unwell and when i came home from work sugar level was 24.4 and that was with nothing to eat for at least 5.5 Hours phoned 111 NHS a DSN phoned me back they were fantastic told me i must see the Dr today and to change Dr as soon as possible she told me that she would write a report and the Dr would see it this morning, he did and has now increase Gliclazide to 360 mg divided dose made me an appointment for Blood test this afternoon and made an appointment for 1 weeks time to see the DSN

I shall be telling her i would like someone else to take over my care as i have no confidence in her, last night just for info upon going to bed at 10.00 o'clock my level was 26 and i had had nothing to eat since 6 pm this morning 18.1 fasting, thanks for the advice i really am very greatfull looks like i may be getting somewhere at last

Hi. As the others have said I would suspect Late onset Type 1. You appear to have a failing pancreas like I had when 320mg Gliclazide did nothing anymore. If, however, you are noticeably overweight then resulting insulin resistance would make the insulin produced via the Gliclazide of little use. So, if normal weight and still fairly young I would suspect LADA. If overweight then reduce the carbs until the weight and blood sugar come down.

Hi carb Foods
Does look like dodgy pancreas could be the problem so I'd say second opinion please.

Thank you for your replies

I would like to ask one more question if i can, is it worth paying for a Gad and C pep test doing ? i am more than willing to pay for them both, has a little experiment this morning i decided not to eat anything until 1 o'clock today to see what happens when i take the Gliclazide, bear in mind i took 160mg of glic last night at 1800 hours just before my tea i also took 160mg this morning at 08.30 and had nothing but water until 1300 at 08.30 my level was 16.1 at 13.00 it was 21.4, please forgive me for not eating anything i just am desperate to find out what is going on as everyday i am feeling more and more out of it.

Regards

Hi

Just as an afterthought i seem to be getting some pains where i think my pancreas sits that radiate to my back, these will not be connected will they?
