Hi all!

I'm new to this forum and new to the world of diabetes.
Doc's not sure if I'm T1 or T2 yet, but time will tell. Although this came on very quickly so she's thinking maybe T1.
Had blood tests for something else back in Sept and that showed normal bold glucose.
So to make a long story short, I had been feeling fatigued for the past few weeks and finally broke down and went back to the doctor. Had some bloodwork done but later that day felt so bad (and had newly found blurred vision) that I went to the ER.
They tested me and I was 35.9mmol/L!!!
Cholesterol of 10 and triglycerides that were "incredibly high" to quote the ER doc.
I spent a week in hospital to bring down my glucose and run a battery of tests. I'll see my specialist tomorrow and hopefully get a clearer picture.
I figured joining this forum would be a great way to network with people just like me and hopefully make the road ahead less uncharted.
Still haven't got under 10mmol/L but with adjustments to my Novorapid and Lantus hopefully I'll see 4-7 soon. Also in Janumet, Pravastatin, and Fenofinrate Micro.
Little scary being diagnosed, my life is pretty chaotic as it is and now this to add.

Thanks for all warm wishes and welcomes. . You know it's strange, I just thought being tired all the time was normal from my busy, single dad life. Even though I have been managing my diabetes for less than a week, still feel better than I have in a long while.
I've got my appointment with the diabetes specialist tomorrow. Looking forward to what she has to say. Gaining some understanding is going to go a long way to making me feel better and somewhat in control of this.
Anyone else here have their diabetes just sneak up on them with little warning? I'd be curious to know...
I'll be sure to post what my specialist divulges tomorrow.

I may just take you up on that KerryGrant26, this has been the most emotional and shocking thing to ever happen to me... I was always in decent shape and healthy before this.
I think "blindsided" is the word I'm looking for. Don't think it's quite sunk in yet.

Sorry about your diagnosis. It was a shock and an emotional roller coaster to all of us when first diagnosed.

It sounds to me as if you have the right attitude to get on top of things though. You are seeking to educate yourself on your disease and this will empower you to control it.

I had no warning at all just the tiredness that I brushed off thinking I was just knackered with running around after my 7month old and her being 8 weeks early just catching up on me. It just shows how easily we can ignore our body crying out. I hope everything went well for you today, I've just come back from m y appointment with more new insulin lol x

Hey Kerry... That's exactly how I felt, minus the baby part. Lol. I came back from my specialist and because the Janumet isn't having any effect she is wondering if I might be type 1.
She's got me in Lantus and Novorapid. Using those l've managed to get my glucose down into the single digits. Although I went 6 hours without eating a couple days ago and almost passed out! The balancing act between food and insulin is a tough one indeed.

I'm new to this diabetes thing to, only in my case I had an op nearly 2 years ago for small bowel cancer and the surgeon decided to take my spleen and most of my pancreas out as well. No one told me there was a chance of me developing diabetes so I never gave it a thought until I went for my last check up and my BG was 12.8 the nurse never commented of the level and I was to much of a coward to ask about it so I went home and checked the internet and decided to self check my BG, so by this time it was 25.5. The wheels on the NHS are very slow but I've now been seen at the clinic and like you they don't know what type of diabetes I have yet, it's even been suggested by a doctor my pancreas could be failing. "So menu doctors and so many opinions"

I thought I was so shattered and weary with fighting off pneumonia and septis infections .
Nope - good ole Diabetes had 'got' me ...
Hadnt been diabetic pre these either .
Didnt accept nor tollerate this news well at all .

Was furious at the unfainess [as I felt it was initially] struggled for the first 6 months to accept and come to terms with this .
Have severe medical intollerances so nothing worked until we found Porcine insulin suited me best !
By this time it was 12months down the line ...

Then all my help,info,knowledge and support meeting other diabetics grew via the forum

Diabetes crept up on me in 2012. Just extreme tiredness (normal for late 50s and working!) and one or two vague, non-specific symptoms that I now recognise but didn't then, despite web searches. Also weight loss, but who worries about that! Anyhow, DKA arived after a few days of general unwellness, followed by loss of appetite, peculiar breathing, vomiting and coma. Woke up in resus in the local hospital to be told I had T1 diabetes. Came out of the blue, with no family history, and, two weeks before diagnosis, I'd been on a couple of trips to London and Birmingham and basically felt fine. In summary, it took about a week for diabetes to set in. Bizarre.

I remember how I felt in the weeks after diagnosis. It wasn't easy, and for the first few months I actually felt worse than before diagnosis, but it did get better eventually. It took about six months though, as Anna 29 says, to come to terms with everything. I hated having to tell the DVLA, cancel a blood donation session (they don't take people on insulin), inform insurance companies. On the plus side, husband and work have been fantastic, and I feel fine now. I've more or less got over the 'angry' stage and accepted my lot. I was perhaps lucky that I went straight into T1 and didn't experience a misdiagnosis as T2.

Like others have said, I've found this forum invaluable for information.

Hi mopsy, that is very similar to what happened to me. Felt generally unwell for about a week and a half and it finally culminated in a trip to the hospital ER because my vision went blurry.
I was told I was in a state of DKA when in arrived. I didn't get to the coma part thank god but my glucose was 35.9 mmol/L.
I'm 40 slightly overweight so the doctors were thinking type 2, but now the Janumet (prescribed for type 2's) doesn't seem to be doing anything.
I'm still waiting for the results of my c-peptide test which tells if I'm producing insulin and if I'm type 1 or 2.
However my family doctor told me that DKA is extremely rare in type 2's and is almost always happens with type 1's who don't take any insulin (pre-diagnosis).
Has anyone ever heard this? I'm treating myself like a type 1 (at my doctors request) until we know for sure. Just ate something and didn't take insulin (although still on Janumet). If glucose rises I'm guessing I'm type 1, if not I'm guessing type 2)
I know it will rise anyway, but I'm guessing it will go up pretty quickly if I'm type 1 and not so much if I'm type 2 and the Janumet is working.
So much trial and error....
