Been to see new doctor today as my previous one had retired. In the last couple of years I have halved my smoking, lost 4 stones in weight & got my numbers down from regularly in the 30's to an average of 5.1. Doctor~how much do you smoke? Told him. Do you want a heart attack? Thought of asking if they were on special offer, but thought better of it. How much do you weigh? Don't know. He weighed me & said you haven't lost any weight since last time. Do you know what that means? Erm, I'm still fat? (my mirror tells me that). You are obese. Not thrilled with his attitude so far. Asked for repeat script for Glic & test strips. Yup, you've guessed. You can have the Glic but only 1 box of strips a month. How often do you test? 6~8 times a day usually. You only need to test last thing at night (in case you have a hypo!!) & only once a day. Erm, bit I'm on Glic so I need to test when I drive. Well don't test at night then!! At which point I picked up my script for strips & Glic, burst into tears & walked out.

So what has been the point of all I feel I have achieved? I suffer from OCD & if I can't test when I need to, can't see any point in testing at all. My bloods are in the 2's & 3's most days now (combination of lower carbs , Met & Glic), but he never asked what numbers I am getting. So really now don't want to take any meds, cos I can see me going into a coma & not recovering.

Been crying since I left surgery (don't even ask bout the receptionist & trying to book another appt). Where do I go from here. Just give up?

Thanks if you've managed to get to the end of this long, rambling saga

Ca you change GPs? See a specialist? I s there a diabetic nurse?

Buy some SD Codefree strips and a meter.
Your numbers seem a bit low to me at 2s and 3s but I am not medically qualified.

Brilliant on the weight loss - keep going.! You obviously don't need me to mention smoking too.

You've done well so far. Dont let one doctor with no people skills put you off

Rude people !
Not great attitude from your doc but if your bloods are in 2's and 3's most days you can't drive anyway ?

Hello Smartie,

You know you're doing OK (you say "all I feel I have achieved"). Well done for some fantastic achievements over the last 2 years. Much better, as you appreciate, to halve your smoking successfully, than to have given up completely several times and gone back.
Gradual progress is solid progress.
But I understand the tears and this can happen to me with only a slightly wrong phrase from a shop assistant or other stranger, when life feels a bit difficult. The straw that broke the camel's back. And then the stranger looks at me (or you) like I'm some mad old woman because I'm apparently in tears over some thoughtless remark.
You know you're doing well. Keep it up!

Jane.

So sorry you had such a lousy experience with that useless GP. General Practitioner? I can think of better words to use with those letters but better not put it here or I might get kicked off.

If you are going to have to see this quack regularly would it be an idea to change to another? They really have no idea how their communication skills, or lack of them, affect us.

You have done well losing weight and cutting down smoking at the same time, both of which are difficult on their own let alone together, so please dis what that stupid man said and pat yourself on the back for what you have achieved so far and carry on.
You can do it !
Supportive hugs coming at you x

Is there another GP at the practice you can see?

I know what it's like to deal with unsympathetic receptionists and doctors. The only way I can get an appointment at my surgery is to cry - and I'm sure that's mainly because I wrote a letter to the Practice Manager a while ago complaining about my treatment. Probably have a note on my file now!

Writing it down and sending it in (not necessarily as a complaint) could be one way to get your point across - if you tell them what you've told us it might make them understand better. I find it hard to remember what I need to say and get flustered when I'm face to face so I always write down what I want to say - sometimes I've just handed that to the doctor!

yes just what is the point. seen my practice nurse today, (still under hospital) why do you have to test so many times a day?? (hospital told me so)
your on 2 lots of insulin why? (hospital put me on them) your blood sugars are still to high (I know that's why i am testing them 4times a day but they have come down from in the 30's to lower teens in 2 weeks) so what would you like me to do stop every thing no testing, no insulin get out and come back when your in a better frame of mind so I left. never going back.

but you are doing so well with every thing just tell them to **ss off.

Hi Smartlady. Have you ever been to the diabetic clinic at the n&n? I go there and they are very nice. I don't see my gp for my diabetes.

If you're on glic, and regularly 2and 3's it's too low to drive, and you need to consider addressing the diet/meds combination.

I never drive below 5 huni. But if I've not got enough strips to see if I am or not, then my car is going to be feeling very lonely. I wanted to discuss my meds with the doctor but by the time I had put my point about the strips, he said my time was up!!

There was a procedure to go through, I can't remember it, but it involved initially putting the request in writing, with reference to the dvla guidelines for testing before driving, as it tended to focus their minds more once they realised they could be held negligent, and couldn't simply deny any knowledge later if anything happened.

Give up??? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I can't wait for the day when I finally get my BG's down to a settled 5mmol-6mmol (they're still rather Himalayic), but as far as that over-qualified, under-brain-celled GP is concerned you do one thing: Complainand move to another provider! Send him/her a copy of the DVLA guidance on Diabetes and Driving and then ask how you are to drive if you can't prove to the Police/Courts/etc., that your BG level was good for driving (note the comment from mo1905)?

Hi. Yes, not a good attitude from the HCP. Your low blood sugar implies your Glic dosage needs to be reduced. This should also help reduce weight gain (or speed weight loss). You really don't need to test 6-8 times a day. I'm on two insulins and typically test only twice day; always before driving. I'm lucky as my sugars are very predictable but it is easy to test too often with no real end purpose

Thanks every one for your replies. I phoned the doctors today & asked if I can be referred to the diabetes clinic, (thanks for that suggestion Sarah & the chat), & if I get no joy I shall make an official complaint & change surgeries. Stopped taking my meds so there's no risk of hypos now.

Sounds like you Are still taking the same amount of Mede as you did when you were much heavier. I think you should have your mess decreased based on that. 2s and 3s seems very low to me. You have less body mass and still treating it if you were much larger. Just a thought....

Please please please dont give up!! I had a similar experience and felt that there is no way I should be treated like that. So I changed GP surgeries and it was the best thing I ever did!!! If I ever find that things get bad again I wouldnt hesitate to change again. You deserve to get the right support with the appropriately trained staff who are there to support you not make you feel worse. I hooe you have a better experience in the future.

Get a second opinion or new gp straight away that was rude uncalled for and he had no care for you opinion or feelings! That was totally unprofessional
